Farm Report: Weiman Earns Road Shutout

Colorado’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters, split a pair of games last weekend.


Lake Erie first suffered a 3-2 loss to Hamilton on Friday (Oct. 31). T.J. Hensick and Brian Willsie notched goals for the Monsters and Jason Bacashihua stopped 29-of-32 shots, but the Bulldogs broke open a tie game with the only goal of the third period.

The Monsters then snapped a four-game losing streak as Tyler Weiman recorded a 37-save shutout in a 3-0 victory Saturday at Toronto. Aaron MacKenzie, Chris Durno and Hensick each scored a goal to improve Lake Erie’s record to 4-5-0-1 on the season.

Hensick leads Lake Erie and is tied for fifth in the AHL with 13 points (6g/7a). He has scored in four straight games and holds a seven-game point streak, during which he has totaled nine points (5g/4a). Willsie is the team’s second-leading point-getter with seven goals and three assists through 10 games.

The Monsters will wrap up their six-game road trip this Friday (Oct. 7) against the Grand Rapids Griffins before returning home for a Sunday tilt against Hamilton.

Johnstown Chiefs
After dropping a 5-2 decision Thursday at Trenton, the Johnstown Chiefs earned a 3-2 shootout win over Wheeling on Saturday and also picked up a 4-2 victory Sunday against Dayton.

After picking up two assists in Thursday’s loss, Raymond Macias added another helper in Saturday’s victory over Wheeling. Codey Burki also had an assist for Johnstown.

Macias then extended his point streak to four games (1g/4a) with a helper in Sunday’s contest against Dayton.

The Chiefs will open a four-game homestand this weekend when the club hosts Reading for a pair of contests.

NCAA
Boston University senior Brandon Yip scored once and tallied an assist in the Terriers’ 7-2 win over the University of Vermont last weekend. Defensemen Colby Cohen and Kevin Shattenkirk each added a pair of assists for BU. Yip (3g/4a), Cohen (1g/6a) and Shattenkirk (2g/4a) are each averaging at least a point-per-game through six contests.

-Ryan Stoa had a goal and an assist in the University of Minnesota’s 3-3 tie with Minnesota State University, Mankato on Friday. The Gophers’ captain repeated his performance (1g/1a) in Saturday’s rematch, a 6-3 Minnesota victory. Mike Carman scored the game-winning goal on Saturday and added two assists.

-Billy Sauer made 34 saves to earn a victory in the University of Michigan’s 4-3 triumph over Ohio State University last Friday. Sauer now holds a 2-2-0 record with a .901 save percentage this season.

-Boston College freshman Paul Carey notched his second goal of the season and added a helper in the Eagles’ 4-3 win Friday at Merrimack. The performance marked Carey’s first NCAA multi-point outing.

OHL
Both of Colorado’s prospects in the Ontario Hockey League, Peterborough netminder Trevor Cann and Mississauga defenseman Cameron Gaunce, will suit up for Team OHL at the 2008 ADT Canada Russia Challenge. Cann participated in the Challenge last season, stopping 16-of-18 shots in his one appearance to lead Team OHL to a 4-2 victory over Russia.  It was previously announced that fellow Avalanche prospect Kelsey Tessier will represent Team QMJHL in the event.

-Cann earned his second straight victory after making 39 stops in a 4-3 win versus Ottawa on Thursday. The netminder now owns a 4-5-0 record with a .922 save percentage in nine appearances.

-Gaunce notched an assist Sunday in Mississauga’s 3-2 loss to Belleville. The defenseman leads the Majors with 10 points (5g/5a) and ranks second with 25 penalty minutes.

-Defenseman Kevin Montgomery, who began this season with the Lake Erie Monsters, has been assigned to the London Knights (OHL). Montgomery spent the last two years with the Knights.

QMJHL
-Quebec center Kelsey Tessier recorded an assist and a game-high +3 rating in the Remparts’ 6-2 win over Val-d’Or Saturday.

-Victoriaville blueliner Joel Chouinard assisted on his team’s only tally during a 4-1 loss to Shawinigan on Friday.

-Peter Delmas picked up his fourth victory of the season after stopping 30-of-33 shots in Lewiston’s 5-3 win over Acadie-Bathurst on Saturday. Delmas was then saddled with a loss Sunday, as P.E.I. topped the MAINEiacs by a 3-1 count.

USHL
-Nathan Condon scored his fourth goal of the season – an unassisted tally in the first period – during the Fargo Force’s 2-1 triumph over Sioux Falls on Thursday. Condon is tied for first on the Force with five points (4g/1a).
