Patrik Laine

WINNIPEG -- Patrik Laine had a goal and two assists, and Blake Wheeler and Nikolaj Ehlers scored 1:09 apart in the third period to help the Winnipeg Jets defeat the Colorado Avalanche 4-1 at MTS Centre on Sunday.
Wheeler scored his ninth of the season at 2:54 when he jumped up in the play to create an odd-man rush to give the Jets a 2-0 lead. Ehlers scored his sixth and second in 19 games at 4:03 to make it 3-0 when his wrist shot beat Avalanche goalie Calvin Pickard high glove side.
"I thought it looked pretty good," Wheeler said. "Sometimes when it doesn't feel like a whole lot is going on out there that's when you're playing your best. We didn't give them a whole lot and finally broke them down in the third period."

Mark Scheifele had two assists and Connor Hellebuyck made 27 saves for the Jets (15-16-3). Laine leads all rookies with 29 points (18 goals, 11 assists).
Jarome Iginla scored for the Avalanche (11-8-1).
"Offensively, it looked like we didn't have our legs," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. "We've been struggling to score all year but then tonight we weren't generating anything either."
Pickard allowed three goals on 30 shots and has lost three straight starts in place of Semyon Varlamov, who continues to recover from a groin injury. The Avalanche are 2-9-1 in their past 12 games.
Laine scored his 18th goal at 7:06 of the second period to make it 1-0. The Avalanche had the Jets pinned in their own end before Paul Postma was able to clear the zone. Scheifele got in behind the defense with Laine streaking down the left side. He made the pass to Laine, whose one-timer beat Pickard on his blocker side.

Iginla scored at 17:59 on the power play when his point shot beat Hellebuyck up high. Colorado pulled Pickard in favor of the extra attacker.
"At that point, we're just trying to give it a chance," Iginla said. "With a couple minutes left, you never know. You don't want to be down three. We were right there with them but the third period they went bang, bang and you got to give them credit, they deserved that game by the way they played in the third period."
Ehlers scored his second of the game into an empty net at 19:30 to make it 4-1.

Goal of the game

Scheifele picked up a loose puck at center ice and rushed into the Avalanche zone. Laine, streaking down the left side, stopped near the top of the left circle and Scheifele made the pass to Laine, who scored on his one-time shot.
"It was a good play from [Postma] at the blue line and we got a 2-on-1 with Scheifele," Laine said. "He's a really good passer. He got the pass to me and it was easy to score."

Save of the game

Pickard made a glove save on Dustin Byfuglien in the second period after a cross-ice pass from Marko Dano moments after the Jets made it 1-0.

Highlight of the game

Wheeler worked his way past Tyson Barrie to send the Jets in 2-on-1. Mathieu Perreault made the quick pass to Wheeler, who tapped the pick past Pickard.

Unsung performance of the game

Jets forward Bryan Little assisted on the game winner, had five shots and won 60 percent of his faceoffs.

They said it

"We just have to limit our turnovers and limit our odd-man rushes against because we've said it the last three, four games, every chance and every goal they get, we feel like we're giving it to them. They're a good team and they're good here at home, but it feels like they're not doing much out of the ordinary. We're giving up chances and we're being too stubborn in the way we play with the puck. We turn pucks over and that will cost you." -- Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog
"All you care about is how the team is doing and the personal [stats] come second. It's not that I've been feeling that I haven't played well. I've been feeling really good and playing with a lot of confidence." --Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers on scoring his second goal in 19 games
