PHILADELPHIA – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club selected center Conner Bleackley with the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NHL Draft held tonight at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
Bleackley, 17, played in 71 games with the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League, leading the team with 68 points and finishing tied for the team lead in goals (29).
He was named Red Deer’s captain in November 2013, and at age 17 is one of only three first-time draft-eligible players to wear the “C” in the Canadian Hockey League this season: also Aaron Ekblad (No. 2-ranked North American skater) of the Barrie Colts and Sam Reinhart (No. 3-ranked North American skater) of the Kootenay Ice.
Bleackley lists his favorite team as the Avalanche and his favorite player as Joe Sakic.
