Avs Better Halves Honor Five Colorado Community Groups

by - Official Site of the Colorado Avalanche / Colorado Avalanche
On Thursday, April 5, at the Avalanche vs. Columbus Blue Jackets game, the Avs Better Halves (the wives and girlfriends of Avalanche players, coaches and management) awarded $20,000 to five Colorado community organizations.

The funds were raised by ABH this season via in-arena events including a holiday tree auction and autographed T-shirt sale at the Avalanche Military Appreciation Game.

Community Recipients included:

Ronald McDonald House
Being alone in the hospital can be a traumatic experience, especially for children. And more than ever before, children in need of emergency treatment are being brought to Denver from rural Colorado and bordering states for expert medical care.  For the past three decades, Ronald McDonald House® Charities of Denver has offered a loving home-away-from-home to families needing to be near their seriously ill or injured children while they're being treated at metropolitan area hospitals.

The Gathering Place

Denver’s only daytime, drop-in center for women, their children, and transgender individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty.
Home Front Cares
The Home Front Cares primarily provides emergency and responsive support and grants for Colorado’s service members, veterans and family members, who have been impacted by deployment in harm’s way.  Programs include emergency assistance funds, medical assistance, adaptive housing and vehicle modification and wounded troops casualty assistance.

Freedom Service Dogs

Trains rescue dogs to assist and provide companionship for people with disabilities (many clients are veterans). FSD provides lifetime support to both client, and service dog, to encourage independence, mobility, and loving, therapeutic bond.

Miracles on Ice

A one week summer camp for 9-11 year-old inner city boys and girls aimed at teaching basic hockey skills while providing classroom sessions in Math and Reading. The children are supplied with equipment, transportation, and meals for the duration of the camp. The camp teaches students the importance of maintaining a strong mind and healthy body, and encourages discipline, commitment, and team play by blending education with athletics in a positive environment for learning.
