WESTMINSTER, Colo.-The 2016 Colorado Avalanche Rookie Showcase is underway and the Avs are off to a great start after defeating the San Jose Sharks 4-1 on Saturday at the Ice Centre at the Promenade.

The first day of the tournament was promising for Colorado's prospects, which scored four goals while holding San Jose to a lone late tally.

"I thought there was really good intensity between both teams, and that's why you do these tournaments," said Avalanche assistant general manager Craig Billington.

Goaltenders Spencer Martin and Chase Marchand split the game, stopping 35 shots between the two of them. Even though both saw playing time in the first matchup, Martin will be the lone goalie against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

"I like both of them. When it gets to goaltending, it's pretty simple," said Billington. "If they keep it out of the net, you like them. When they don't, not so much. They both did a really good job tonight."

The Avalanche returns to the ice Sunday afternoon, looking to have a repeat performance against the Ducks at 1:00 p.m. After executing their game plan against a young San Jose lineup, the Avs will be tested as they take on a Ducks team that is more experienced at the professional level.

Admission is free and open to the public, but space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
