Avalanche Introduces Pee Wee Team

by Staff Writer / Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche introduced the Colorado Avalanche Pee Wee hockey team prior to the National Anthem at the team’s game on Monday, February 2, 2009 vs. the Calgary Flames.

The 2008-09 Colorado Avalanche Pee Wee team will participate in the 50th Quebec International Hockey Tournament held in Quebec City from February 12 – 22, 2009.  Each year the tournament hosts 110 teams from 14 countries and is known worldwide as one of the largest and most prestigious Pee Wee hockey tournaments.

This year’s the representatives, the Colorado Springs Jr. Tigers coached by Steve Hammer, earned this unique opportunity by winning the Colorado Avalanche Quebec Qualifier Tournament in November 2008.  The Colorado Springs Jr. Tigers will hold the title of Avalanche Pee Wee team for the second time during the 2008-09 season, as they held the title previously in 2002-03.

By becoming the Avalanche Pee Wee representative, the team receives full sponsorship by the Avalanche organization including travel, lodging, complete Avalanche uniforms and travel gear for the Quebec International Pee Wee Hockey Tournament.  The players gain immense hockey experience by playing in the tournament, but some of the best experiences for the players comes through the billeting process.  This process, which takes players and pairs them with Canadian families, provides additional experiences and creates relationships that players will remember for a lifetime.  The host families act as their personal guides of historic Quebec City and provide insight of the distinctive Quebec culture.

The team is guaranteed two tournament games, but will play in several exhibition games against other NHL Pee Wee teams as well as teams from other countries.  The team opens competition against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday, Feb. 13.
