Lake Erie Monsters

The Lake Erie Monsters opened the 2013 calendar year with three games in three nights, going 2-1-0 during that stretch. The Monsters split two home games with the Charlotte Checkers on Thursday-Friday, and then went on to beat the Hamilton Bulldogs in a shootout on Saturday in Hamilton.

The Monsters currently hold an 18-15-2-1 record for 39 points, placing them third in the North Division. They trail the second-place Abbotsford Heat by two points and are currently holding onto eighth place in the Western Conference.

Rookie forwards Mike Sgarbossa (13g/15a) and Andrew Agozzino (11g/17a) continue to lead the Lake Erie Monsters in scoring this season with 28 points each. Sgarbossa and Agozzino are currently tied for third in the AHL rookie scoring race.

Tyson Barrie ranks fourth among all AHL defensemen with 27 points (6g/21a) in 36 games this season, and leads the Monsters with 21 assists.

Kieran Millan, who was recently called up from the Denver Cutthroats on Dec. 29, earned his first AHL start against the Charlotte Checkers on Friday, Jan. 4. He allowed four goals on 26 shots in a 4-0 loss. Millan, the Avalanche’s fifth-round draft pick in 2009, has put together an 8-6-2 record with the Denver Cutthroats (Central Hockey League) with a 2.36 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage.

The Monsters, who are in the midst of a six-game road trip, have another three games in three nights this week. They play a pair in San Antonio before wrapping up the back-to-back-to-back set in Houston on Saturday.

Denver Cutthroats

The Denver Cutthroats are currently fourth in the Central Hockey League with 40 points (18-12-4). The Cutthroats are tied with the third-place Missouri Mavericks in points, but are fourth because Missouri has played one less game.

Denver has been without defenseman Gabriel Beaupre, who was recalled to Lake Erie on Dec. 26. The Cutthroats were also without the services of Millan, who was called up on Dec. 29 and returned on Jan. 5.

The Cutthroats’ other rookie netminder, Kent Patterson, was honored with three league awards for the month of December. He was named the CHL Goaltender of the Month, CHL Rookie of the Month, and was named one of ‘Oakley’s Three Stars’ for his efforts in December. Patterson posted a 6-1-1 record to go along with a 1.85 GAA and a .943 save percentage in eight games during the month.
