Avs are going to the Second Round of the 2020 playoff

The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Arizona Coyotes 7-1 on Wednesday afternoon in Game 5 to win the first-round series 4-1.

Nathan MacKinnon (two goals, two assists), Nazem Kadri (two goals), J.T. Compher (one goal, one assist), Andre Burakovsky (two assists), Gabriel Landeskog (two assists) and Mikko Rantanen (two assists) had multi-point performances while goaltender Philipp Grubauer stopped 23 shots in the series-clinching game.

It was the second-ever meeting between the Avs and Coyotes in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and Colorado has now won both matchups 4-1. The Avalanche defeated the then-Phoenix Coyotes in five games as well during the 2000 Western Conference Quarterfinals.

Colorado is in the postseason for the third straight year, which ranks as the third-longest run in franchise history. The Nordiques/Avalanche made 11 straight trips to the playoffs from 1995 to 2006 and Quebec made seven consecutive visits from 1981-1987.

With the No. 1-seed Vegas Golden Knights having won their Round 1 matchup with the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, the No. 2-seed Avalanche will face the higher of the other two teams that advance to the second round. If the Dallas Stars, who lead their best-of-seven set 3-2, defeat the Calgary Flames then the Avs will play the Stars in Round 2. If No. 6 Calgary wins that series, then Colorado will face the winner of the St. Louis Blues-Vancouver Canucks series.
