A Star Among Stars

by Staff Writer / Colorado Avalanche
Joe Sakic's four assists in the NHL All-Star Game on Wednesday allowed him to set All-Star records for career assists and multiple point games.

Sakic's four assists pushed his All-Star total to 16, surpassing Mark Messier's record of 14. Sakic also moved into third place on the All-Star points list with 22, trailing only Wayne Gretzky (25) and Mario Lemieux (23). Joe's four-assist effort was the seventh multiple point game of his All-Star career, passing Wayne Gretzky for the most in All-Star history.

Sakic, who captained the Western Conference team, made his 12th appearance in the All-Star Game and was voted a starter for the fourth time in his career. It was his 13th selection to the mid-season classic, as he did not play in 1997 due to injury. Sakic captured All-Star MVP honors in 2004 after recording a hat trick at the Xcel Energy Center.
