This week's subject is forward Ryan Smyth, who signed a long-term free-agent contract with the Avalanche on July 1, 2007. Smyth went on to post 37 points (14g/23a) in 55 games during the regular season and added five points (2g/3a) in eight playoff contests.
Oct. 3 vs. Dallas - Putting on the Sweater Ryan Smyth suited up for the first time as a member of the Avalanche on opening night against the Dallas Stars, skating 19:16 during his first game at Pepsi Center
Oct. 7 vs. San Jose - Breaking the Barrier Smyth scored on a wraparound attempt and added an assist - his first points as a member of the Avalanche - and was +3 in a 6-2 win over the Sharks
Oct. 16 vs. Calgary - Shootout Winner Trailing Calgary 4-0 early in the second, Smyth scored one of the Avs' four straight goals to send the game to OT and then a shootout, where he again beat Miikka Kiprusoff on his attempt to give the Avs the victory
Oct. 23 @ Edmonton - Emotional Return In an emotional scene, Smyth returned to the city where he spent the first 12-plus seasons of his career and received a heartfelt tribute from the Oilers' organization
Oct. 26 @ Calgary - Putting out the Flames Just 10 days after Colorado's comeback win vs. Calgary, Smyth again helped the Avs top the Flames. The forward tipped home a Joe Sakic feed 23 seconds into OT to give the Avs a 3-2 victory
Dec 1 @ Los Angeles - Third Period Magic Smyth broke open a 2-2 third-period tie with a pair of goals, striking 19 seconds into the final frame and again at the 11:25 mark as the Avs pulled out a 5-2 win
Dec. 5 vs. Columbus - Helping Hand The forward recorded a season-high three assists against Columbus and was named Third Star of the Game, but the Avs dropped a 5-4 decision to the Blue Jackets
Dec. 9 vs. St. Louis - Make it Three...Again In a 9-5 rout over St. Louis, Smyth scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 17:27 of the second period and added two assists to mark his 2nd three-point effort in the course of three games
April 9 @ Minnesota - Impressive Debut In Game One of the Western Conference Quarterfinals - his playoff debut as an Av - Smyth scored a power-play goal and was also awarded only the 53rd penalty shot in playoff history (the attempt was stopped by Niklas Backstrom)
April 19 vs. Minnesota - Wrapping It Up Smyth's goal at 12:20 of the second period proved to the game-winner as the Avs earned a 2-1 win and 4-2 series victory over the Minnesota Wild in the Western Conference Quarterfinals
