This week's subject is Avalanche captain Joe Sakic, who signed a one-year deal on Wednesday to return for his 20th NHL season.
Oct. 7 vs. San Jose - Off the Charts With a goal and an assist, Sakic passed Phil Esposito (1590) for eighth place on the all-time points list. His goal also moved him past Bobby Hull for sole possession of 14th on the all-time goals list (611)
Oct. 13 vs. Columbus - Hats Off During a 5-1 triumph over the Blue Jackets, the Avalanche captain notched the 15th hat trick of his illustrious career, putting him behind only Peter Stastny (16) for the most in franchise history
Oct. 26 @ Calgary - Club 1600 On a historic night, Sakic opened the scoring at 7:27 of the first period and also assisted on Ryan Smyth’s game-winner 23 seconds into overtime – a point that doubled as the 1,600th of his career
Nov. 28 vs. Edmonton - Just Passing By Sakic scored the eventual game-winner at 8:45 of the second period with the Avs on a power play. The tally marked the 203rd power-play goal of his career, passing Steve Yzerman for 13th all-time
Feb 27 @ Vancouver - Super Joe Sakic tied the game in dramatic fashion, notching a goal with 15 seconds remaining to force overtime. From there, he scored the deciding goal in the Avs’ 3-2 shootout win
March 22 @ Edmonton - Grand Fashion #1 By assisting on Tyler Arnason’s second-period power-play tally against the Oilers, Sakic became just the 11th player in NHL history to reach 1,000 career assists
March 28 vs. Edmonton - Saving the Day In a game with playoff implications, Sakic scored with only 5.9 seconds left in regulation and went on to add the shootout winner in Colorado’s 5-4 triumph over Edmonton
April 1 @ Vancouver - Grand Fashion #2 Sakic again hit a milestone when he assisted on John-Michael Liles’ power-play goal. The helper marked his 1,000th career point in an Avalanche sweater (beginning with the 1995-96 season)
April 6 vs. Minnesota - Finale Fireworks Sakic did it all in the regular season finale. He scored his 205th career power-play goal (passing Wayne Gretzky for 12th all-time), added an assist and tallied during the shootout in the Avs’ 4-3 win
April 9 @ Minnesota - Nice Timing The captain came up big in Game One of the Western Conference Quarterfinals against the Wild, notching his eighth career playoff overtime goal 11:11 into the extra session to give the Avs a 3-2 win
