2006 OLYMPICS: On To The Medal Round

The quarterfinals are set. The United States will meet Finland, Switzerland will take on Sweden, Russia will do battle with Canada and Slovakia will meet the Czech Republic.

At Torino Esposizioni, the Swiss take on the Swedes at 4:30 p.m. local, 10:30 a.m. ET, CBC, USA), with the Russians and Canadians playing at 8:30 p.m. local, 2:30 p.m. ET, CBC, MSNBC).

At Palasport, the Finns and Americans open the quarterfinals (5:30 p.m. local, 11:30 a.m. ET, USA, MSNBC), while the Slovaks and Czechs close out the two-game set at Palasport (9:30 p.m. local, 3:30 p.m. ET, CBC, USA).

The winners of each game will advance to Friday's semifinals.

Both Slovakia and Finland finished the preliminary round undefeated, as Slovakia beat Sweden 3-0 on Tuesday and Finland beat Germany 2-0. Slovakia finished first in Group B and secured an intriguing first-round matchup with the Czech Republic. The two nations used to be know as one, Czechoslovakia, until they split in the early 1990's.

The Finns earned the top spot in Group A and will take on the United States.

Russia defeated Team USA by a 5-4 final on Tuesday to wrap up second place in Group B. They will take on Canada in perhaps the best matchup of the opening round. Canada bounced back from two straight losses to beat the Czechs 3-2 in their final tuneup on Tuesday.

Switzerland earned the second spot in Group A after a 3-3 tie with Italy on Tuesday. The Swiss will meet Sweden in the quarterfinals.
