This Week in Centennial History September 17 to 23

Here are Centennial highlights for the week of September 17-23:

Sept. 23, 1992:Goaltender Manon Rheaume becomes
the first woman
to play in any of the major North American sports leagues when she takes the ice for the first-year Tampa Bay Lightning in a preseason game against the St. Louis Blues. She stops seven of nine shots in the first period, allowing goals by Jeff Brown and Brendan Shanahan.

Sept. 22, 1972: The Soviet Union scores five goals in the third period and
defeats Canada 5-4
in Game 5 of the Summit Series in Moscow. The victory gives the Soviets a 3-1-1 lead in the eight-game series.

Sept. 21, 1902:Howie Morenz, one of the NHL's earliest stars and the most electrifying player of his era,
is born
in Mitchell, Ontario.
Sept. 20, 1951: Hockey Hall of Famer Guy Lafleur, the biggest scorer on the Montreal Canadiens' dynasty teams of the late 1970s,
is born
in Thurso, Quebec. Lafleur leads the League in scoring three times and plays on five Stanley Cup-winning teams with Montreal.

Sept. 19, 1992:Eric Lindros has a goal and an assist for the Philadelphia Flyers in
his much-anticipated NHL debut
, a preseason game against the Quebec Nordiques.

Sept. 18, 1933:Scotty Bowman, the winningest coach in NHL history,
is born
in Montreal. Bowman owns the records for regular-season wins (1,244), playoff wins (223) and Stanley Cup championships (nine)
Sept. 17, 1985:Alex Ovechkin, the NHL's all-time goal-scoring leader among Russian-born players,
is born
in Moscow. Ovechkin is the first NHL player born in Russia to score 500 goals and gets 50 or more goals in seven of his first 11 seasons.
