ARI@TOR: Hinostroza banks home rebound for the lead

TORONTO -- Vinnie Hinostroza scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period for the Arizona Coyotes in a 4-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Sunday.

Hinostroza gave the Coyotes a 3-2 lead at 6:44 when he gathered a rebound at the side of the net and shot off Maple Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen's back.
"All-around great play," Hinostroza said. "We played simple, got the puck out, Richard] Panik made a great play to [Derek] Stepan. I think we had a few chances before I got the rebound and threw it off the back of the goalie, so it was nice to contribute."

Lawson Crouse had a goal and an assist, Stepan had two assists, and Darcy Kuemper made 24 saves for Arizona (22-22-4), which is 5-1-1 in its past seven games.
"Just by watching, you can see the commitment we've had to playing on top of teams, playing defensive and playing as a team, including tonight," Kuemper said. "We're having a lot of success doing it lately. We're working hard so we just have to keep it going."

ARI@TOR: Kempe beats Andersen on breakaway

Travis Dermott and John Tavares scored, and Andersen made 27 saves for Toronto (29-17-2), which has lost two in a row and is 1-4-0 in its past five games.
"We just have to stay the course, stay with it and keep working through it," Tavares said. "It's not easy at times, but this is a great challenge of character and a great opportunity to find a way to figure it out and solve that puzzle of where we need to get to."
Dermott gave the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead at 11:45 of the first period on a shot from the left point. William Nylander had his first point in eight games with an assist on the goal.
Mario Kempe tied it 1-1 at 2:16 of the second period. Alex Goligoski's stretch pass hit off Crouse's stick, but Kempe gathered the loose puck and got behind Maple Leafs defensemen Martin Marincin and Igor Ozhiganov before scoring on a breakaway. Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock challenged the play for offside, but the call was upheld after a video review.
Clayton Keller gave the Coyotes a 2-1 lead at 15:19, beating Andersen short side from the left circle.
"We played the right way. We came out a little bit slow, but when we settled down a little bit and stuck to our game plan, that's when we got some chances and put some pucks in," Keller said. "Anytime you get some momentum, you seem to play more simple, and I think we did that."
Tavares tied it 2-2 at 3:12 of the third period. Zach Hyman won the face-off to Mitchell Marner, who passed to Tavares for a one-timer from the slot.
Crouse made it 4-2 when he scored into an empty net with 38 seconds left.
"We're really finding our identity in how we want to play as a team so it's good," Hinostroza said. "It doesn't matter (who's in the lineup), we've got so many great characters in here whether somebody is jumping in or out of the lineup, it's great to see and great to be a part of."

They said it

"Big time proud. About a month ago, when things were going bad, we all got together and said we can go one way or the other. We can turn it right or it's going to be an awful year. Everybody's bought in and our defense is really the heartbeat of our team. If they can hold us together back there, we usually can compete with most teams."-- Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet
"I think we're going through some adversity as a team and we want to get out of it as soon as possible. Hopefully in the long run this is something good for us and we learn from it. It just seems like night after night, it's little things that are costing us goals and ending up costing us important points. For us, we need to be consistent for a full 60 minutes." -- Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews

Need to know

Maple Leafs forward Andreas Johnsson left the game with 3:52 left in the second period after falling into the boards and sustaining a concussion.
