Former Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Arthur "Art" Michaluk, 82, passed away March 14, surrounded by family members, in Calgary. He had a 13-year organized-hockey career remarkably filled with championships and served 23 years on the Calgary police force, retiring as a sergeant in 1977.
Michaluk was a standout junior player before World War II. He served five years in the Royal Canadian Air Force and played 36 games over two seasons with the Calgary RCAF Mustangs. He returned to organized hockey after the war and helped the Calgary Stampeders to two Western Canada Senior Hockey League championships. That 1946 Stampeders team also won the Allan Cup, after Michaluk started the play that led to the winning goal. Michaluk won the AHL Calder Cup with the Providence Reds in 1949 and the 1954 Patrick Cup with the Stampeders. He was named to five-straight Western Hockey League All-Star teams.
Michaluk, wearing No. 4, played with the Blackhawks during the 1947-48 season.
Michaluk's first wife, Jerry, died in 1980. He is survived by his wife, Josephine; nine children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, March 18, at Jesuit Martyrs Roman Catholic Church, Evergreen, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Old Timers Hockey Association Scholarship Fund or a charity of your choice.
