Dave Surprenant

Dave Surprenant, 41, was a key component in the Stars' 1998-99 Stanley Cup season, keeping players healthy throughout the playoffs. The Tracy, Minn., native received a bachelor's degree in health and physical education with an emphasis in athletic training from Mankato (Minn.) State University in 1983. Surprenant provided athletic training services at Normandale Community College from 1984-89, while working with a physical therapy clinic in Bloomington, Minn. He also served as a summer assistant athletic trainer for the NFL's New Orleans Saints under head trainer Dean Kleinschmidt from 1981-84. A certified member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association since 1983, Dave was a registered X-ray technologist from 1981-97. Dave was honored to work at the 1992 NHL All-Star Game in Philadelphia. An avid campaigner for helmet safety in kids' sports for the Head First Program, he has served as vice president of the Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers Society for the past four years. Dave and his wife, Julie, are on the advisory board for the L.E.A.P. Foundation (Life Enhancement Association for People), a non-profit organization that provides healthcare for children in Third World countries. A golf enthusiast, Dave and Julie reside in Lewisville, Texas, with their sons, A.J. and Bryan.
Dave Smith

Dave Smith, 56, is one of the few current PHATS/SPHEM members whose roots trace back to the old World Hockey Association. Smith's 30 years in professional hockey were highlighted by equipment manager experience at the 1976 WHA All-Star Game, 1987 Canada Cup and the 1990 NHL All-Star Game. The Toronto native started his career in junior hockey in 1963. He later worked with the International Hockey League's Flint Generals from 1969-72 and the WHA's Cleveland Crusaders from 1972-76. He was the head equipment manager for the St. Louis Blues from 1977-85 before accepting the Minnesota North Stars' top post in 1985, and staying with the franchise during its move to Dallas. A certified member of the American Equipment Managers Association, Dave enjoys fishing and golf. He and his wife, Maxine, reside in Carrollton, Texas. They have a son, Kevin.
