Not even a penalty in overtime could faze Jonathan Quick on Saturday night.

After helping his team kill off a hooking call on Drew Doughty in the final 62 seconds of the extra period, Quick denied Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane in the shootout as the Los Angeles Kings earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks at the Staples Center.

"We were just trying to dig in and leave everything on the ice," Quick said. "We ended up doing it and winning in the shootout. The team's playing great in front of me. We've got to keep the momentum going."

Anze Kopitar and Jack Johnson scored in the shootout for Los Angeles, which hadn't won on home ice since Nov. 5 against Pittsburgh. Wayne Simmonds scored in the second period.

Simmonds broke a scoreless tie when he notched his eighth goal of the season at 2:41 of the second. He carried the puck along the right boards, when he finished off a nifty give-and-go with Michal Handzus on a backhander from the edge of the crease that beat Cristobal Huet (21 saves) between the pads.

Simmonds has scored the Kings' first or only goal in three consecutive games. He nearly won it with 3 minutes left in overtime, when his 20-foot wrist shot got a piece of Huet's glove and trickled just wide of the right post.

"I just try to be a difference maker on this team," Simmonds said. "I come into every game just hoping to score, thinking I can score. It's working out well for me."

Toews tied things up with a power-play goal 6:56 into the third period. With Handzus in the penalty box, Quick denied a wrister from Kane from the top of the right circle, but Toews beat Matt Greene to the rebound and scored his fifth goal of the season and his third in the last 10 games.

Chicago, which is now done with its six-game road trip, had won eight straight before losing 3-0 at Anaheim on Friday night. The Blackhawks will return home to face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday.

"I thought it was a real good road trip," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "We got nine out of 12 points in six tough buildings. At the beginning of it, you would have taken that. I thought the third period today was our best of the game and it put ourselves in a pretty good spot. Every game is going to be a challenge. There are no easy games."
