Raffi Torres burned the Washington Capitals for a pair of third-period goals Sunday.

Ultimately, the team is more concerned with what happened when the Columbus Blue Jackets forward got tangled up with Alex Ovechkin early in the second period at the Verizon Center.

R.J. Umberger's second goal of the game on a Jackets power play gave them a 5-4 win over the Capitals at 1:45 of overtime, after Torres tied the score with 23 seconds left in regulation. Columbus snapped a three-game losing streak.

But the big story was Ovechkin taking just 10 shifts and not returning after coming together with Torres in the offensive zone and going down to the ice. Ovechkin skated to the bench grimacing and immediately left for the locker room. He later termed himself "day-to-day" with an upper-body injury.

''It was kind of a rallying cry,'' said Quintin Laing, who gave the Capitals a 4-3 lead with 3:26 remaining. ''We wanted to prove this team isn't about one guy, it's about a team, and we wanted to show people we can come back.''

Columbus led 2-1 after two periods but had to come back twice in the third. Brooks Laich gave Washington a 3-2 lead with a pair of goals 2:08 apart, and after Torres got his first tying goal with 6:24 left, Laing put the Caps back in front by scoring his second NHL goal and first since Dec. 10, 2007. He had missed the previous three games recovering from the swine flu.

Torres scored a sixth-attacker goal that forced overtime and Caps defenseman Brian Pothier was sent off for interference at the 1:33 mark. It took just 12 seconds for Umberger to beat Jose Theodore with the winning shot, his second power-play goal of the game.

''It's a big win, but we've still got a lot of work to do,'' Nash said. ''When we play on the road, we can't be taking too many penalties. We made some defensive errors when the game was tied. Just got to sharpen up those areas.''

Nicklas Backstrom opened the scoring in the first period for the Capitals before the Jackets jumped ahead 2-1 in the second on goals by Nash and Umberger, the latter of which came on a fluke play. With the Jackets on a power play, Nash sent the puck in from the blue line and it took a funny carom off the boards and back in front. Theodore was going behind the net to play the puck, leaving an empty net for Umberger to net the go-ahead goal.

Laich got his fifth goal on a Washington power play at 8:15 and then struck again to put the home team in front, but Torres evened things up on a wrap-around goal.

"He stepped up for sure," Nash said of Torres. "That first one was huge. Good battle down low, good wrap-around."

Washington earned at least a point for the ninth consecutive game (6-0-3), but losing one of the League's most dynamic players and then the lead made for a downbeat end to the day.

"I thought we played a pretty good third," Capitals center Brendan Morrison said. "We rallied and did a lot of good things offensively, and then we just go and shoot ourselves in the foot. It is frustrating because it was a game we should have won."
