SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -There were only seven shots in the third period of the Washington Capitals' game against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.

Unfortunately for the slumping Panthers, all seven came from the Capitals.

Jose Theodore made 19 saves in his second shutout of the season to lead Washington to a 3-0 win over the Panthers, who didn't have a shot in the goal in the final period.

"I've never been involved in a game where that's happened," Washington coach Bruce Boudreau said. "I think it's a great testament to our players and the commitment they made to winning."

Brooks Laich and Viktor Kozlov scored for Washington, which earned its fourth win in five games. Mike Green added an empty-net goal with 1:27 left, and John Erskine had two assists.

"We played one period tonight, the second, and you're not going to be anybody - we're not going to beat anybody - playing 20 minutes," Panthers coach Pete DeBoer said. "We have to play 60 minutes to compete, just to have a chance to compete with teams. Especially teams like Washington."

Florida dropped a fourth straight game for the first time since late December.

Washington, coming off Monday's 5-1 loss to Atlanta, remained in third place in the Eastern Conference behind New Jersey.

"When you play almost every game the good thing is to be able to bounce back right away," Theodore said. "I've been saying that for the last couple of months and tonight was a great example. Yesterday wasn't my best game and tonight I was looking forward to the challenge and everybody responded."

The Panthers went 8-5 in February but have struggled of late. Florida, which has not been to the playoffs since 2000, entered Tuesday's game in ninth place in the East, one point behind eighth-place Carolina.

"We don't have the luxury of feeling sorry for ourselves or sitting and moaning about it," DeBoer said. "We have to get our heads up."

At Newark, N.J., Martin Brodeur earned his 552nd NHL win and passed childhood idol and Hall of Famer Patrick Roy for the most career victories in league history by stopping 30 shots.

Patrik Elias became the Devils' career leading scorer when he recorded his 702nd point by assisting on Brian Gionta's short-handed goal.

At Detroit, Johan Franzen and Henrik Zetterberg scored 1:32 apart in the third period to lead the Red Wings.

Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist, and Franzen also had an assist for Detroit, which hasn't lost to Philadelphia at home since Nov. 4, 1988 (14-0-2).

At Pittsburgh, NHL scoring-leader Evgeni Malkin tied a career-high with five points to surpass 100 for the second consecutive season.

Malkin had two goals and three assists to give him 102 points. Sergei Gonchar added a goal and three assists for Pittsburgh.

At Montreal, Chris Drury scored the deciding goal in the shootout after Markus Naslund and Nik Antropov beat Carey Price on New York's first two attempts.

Henrik Lundqvist stopped Andrei Kostitsyn on Montreal's first attempt after making 26 traditional saves for New York, which moved one point ahead of Montreal in a tight Eastern playoff race.

At Tampa, Fla., John Mitchell scored in the second period and the winner in the shootout for Toronto. Mitchell won it with a low shot past the right skate of goalie Karri Ramo.

At St. Paul, Minn., Marek Zidlicky scored the shootout winner over Peter Budaj's glove, and Nick Schultz scored the tying goal for the Wild with less than two minutes left in regulation.

Mikko Koivu and Zidlicky both scored in the shootout to give Minnesota two crucial points.

At Ottawa, Brendan Bell scored twice and the Senators took advantage of undisciplined Buffalo to win the season series 5-1. Filip Kuba had three assists for Ottawa.

At Edmonton, Alberta, Ales Kotalik scored the shootout winner to help the Oilers improve their playoff chances.

Sheldon Souray also scored for the Oilers, who ended a skid of three consecutive overtime losses and moved into a tie with Nashville for seventh place in the West.

David Backes had the lone goal for the Blues, who are three points behind the Oilers and Predators.

At Glendale, Ariz., Shane Doan scored with 26.9 seconds remaining and had three assists for Phoenix.

Kyle Turris scored twice, his first goals since Jan. 8, and chipped in a pair of assists for the Coyotes, who won for the fourth time in five home games against the Sharks.

Joe Thornton had two goals and an assist, and Rob Blake added three assists for the Sharks.

At Vancouver, British Columbia, Ryan Kesler and Mats Sundin each had a goal and an assist, and the Coyotes set a franchise record with their 10th straight home win.

Daniel Sedin also scored, and Roberto Luongo made 24 saves for the Canucks, who moved into a tie with slumping Chicago for fourth place in the West.

Vancouver's streak, which broke the mark set in 1992, started right after the Canucks lost nine straight at home.
