CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -Dustin Boyd's first goal of the season required a lucky bounce - off the goalie's backside.

Boyd banked his shot off Hannu Toivonen, whose 34 saves weren't enough to prevent Calgary from beating the St. Louis Blues 3-1 Tuesday night.

"I just tried to bank it off of him and I was fortunate that it went in," Boyd said.

His goal broke a 1-all tie in the second period and sent the Blues to just their second regulation loss in 11 games (8-2-1).

It was a bad break for Toivonen who was otherwise spectacular in the middle period as Calgary outshot St. Louis 20-2.

"It sucks, it really does, but it's gone now, there's nothing you can about it, you have to learn from it and see what I can do better next time," Toivonen said.

Trailing 1-0 entering the second, Marcus Nilson got the Flames back to even at 8:21 on a gritty effort.

Toivonen made a great glove save stretching out to deny Daymond Langkow's slapshot. However, the puck deflected off his glove and laid in the crease and Nilson darted in just jabbing the puck into the net before being crushed heavily into the goal from behind by hard-charging defenseman Eric Brewer.

Toivonen, who finished with 34 saves, got the call to start when Manny Legace hurt his knee during the pregame warmup. Miikka Kiprusoff had 21 saves for the Flames.

Lee Stempniak scored for St. Louis, which had a chance late in the third to tie it when they got their first power-play of the night with less than four minutes remaining. However, they couldn't take advantage of Calgary's 27th-ranked penalty killing and shortly after exiting the penalty box, Kristian Huselius scored on a breakaway to clinch the victory.

"I give the Flames credit," Blues coach Andy Murray said. "They've been playing really hard for the past number of games. ... We got off to a good start tonight then rested on our laurels after the first 12 minutes.

Notes: In one stretch from early in the second and into the third, Calgary had 18 straight shots on goal... As a result of Legace's injury, the Blues had no backup goaltender on the bench ... Stempniak has scored five goals in 10 career games against Calgary, ... Kiprusoff has gone 32 games since his last shutout.
