Dallas Stars 4, Edmonton Oilers 3 FINAL OT

Tuesday, 08.16.2011 / 5:54 AM

Associated Press

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) _ The Edmonton Oilers are used to losing to the Dallas Stars in the playoffs. Now they're getting all too familiar with regular-season overtime defeats, too.

Bill Guerin scored 3:11 into overtime to lift Dallas to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers that clinched a playoff spot for the Stars.

It was Guerin's second overtime goal against the Oilers in as many games.

``It was big,'' Guerin said. ``It gives guys confidence in themselves and each other.''

Guerin converted Valeri Bure's centering pass for his 33rd goal, scored from point-blank range after Brenden Morrow scored with 54 seconds left in regulation.

When the teams last met, on Feb. 29 in Dallas, the Oilers led 4-1 with 25 minutes remaining, only to watch the Stars score four times _ including Guerin's overtime winner.

Add that to Edmonton's playoff futility against Dallas _ losing five of the six series they've played since 1997 _ and the Oilers are left wondering what they have to do to beat the Stars.

``We're all tired of this scenario,'' Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said. ``It's played itself out seemingly endlessly whenever we've played these guys.''

Fernando Pisani gave the Oilers a 3-2 lead with his second of the night with 6:59 left in regulation.

Eric Brewer also scored for the Oilers, who haven't lost in regulation time in 14 games (8-0-2-4). Edmonton has sole possession of seventh place in the Western Conference with 83 points, five behind Calgary and one ahead of Nashville.

David Oliver and Lubomir Sekeras also scored for the Stars, who've won four in a row and are unbeaten in six (5-0-1).

``I don't know what it is,'' Edmonton forward Ryan Smyth. ``They've got our number and it's disappointing, especially blowing the couple of leads we had.''

Dallas is fourth in the West with 93 points, two more than Vancouver, which beat Los Angeles 1-0.

Trailing 2-0 in the second period, the Stars scored two strange goals 56 seconds apart.

Pierre Turgeon's centering pass banked in off David Oliver's skate at 14:07, and Lubomir Sekeras's point shot appeared to hit an Oilers stick before finding the net behind Ty Conklin.

It was the first goal for Sekeras, playing his first NHL game of the season after being signed as a free agent March 9. Sekeras, who spent the past three seasons with the Minnesota Wild, had 17 points in the Swedish Elite League.

``We need to make the right plays at critical points in the game,'' Marty Turco said. ``You get into a rhythm with that it's really going to help come playoff time.''

Turgeon and Shayne Corson earned assists on both goals.

Turco had a strong second period, allowing his team to rally. He came out to take away a breakaway by Raffi Torres and later stopped Torres on a one-timer in front.

In the first period, Turco picked up a double minor for high-sticking when he whacked Smyth in the mouth with his stick.

``I didn't hit Smytty in the face on purpose,'' he said. ``It was an accident. That's all I'm going to say about that.''

Brewer opened the scoring 2:22 in with a power-play goal. Pisani made it 2-0 at 19:49 of the first.

After Pisani couldn't get the puck out of his own zone, the Oilers finally cleared it and Ryan Smyth rushed up ice. Smyth crossed the Stars blue line and dropped the puck for Pisani, who cut toward Turco on a two-on-one and beat the goalie.
