Nashville Predators 2, Detroit Red Wings 3 FINAL OT

DETROIT (AP) _ All the Detroit Red Wings needed Sunday night was Brendan Shanahan.

Shanahan's third goal of the game, completing his 16th career hat trick, gave the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 overtime win over the Nashville Predators.

``It's great for him and great for the team,'' said Detroit coach Dave Lewis. ``Any time you have a hat trick, it's an exciting night.''

The victory gave the Red Wings 96 points, the most in the NHL.

His shot from the right dot 40 seconds into the extra period, after taking a pass from Chris Chelios, beat Tomas Vokoun on the short side and stretched Detroit's unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1).

``I was coming up the ice ... Cheli looked like he was looking for somebody to come down the right wing,'' said Shanahan. ``I had good speed and got a good shot on goal.''

Shanahan also tied Johnny Bucyk for 17th place on the career goals list with 556.

Henrik Zetterberg added two assists for the Red Wings.

Jeremy Stevenson and Denis Arkhipov got Nashville's goals. The Predators are seventh in the Western Conference, tied with Los Angeles with 79 points, but with more victories than the Kings. St. Louis is one point behind the Predators and Kings.

``You've got to be positive. They're No. 1. We came out with a point, we're not chasing them,'' said Nashville goaltender Tomas Vokoun, who made 28 saves. ``We got a point, and that's a positive thing. It's not going to be easy, but getting a point in here is positive.''

Shanahan's second of the game tied it at 2, 9:16 into the third period. He put a shot under the crossbar from a goalmouth scramble.

``That puck was going through feet and in a scramble,'' Shanahan said. ``Not a pretty goal, just going to the net and getting an ugly goal.''

Arkhipov's goal 2:20 into the second period gave the Predators a 2-1 lead. He tipped in a pass from Martin Erat.

Each team scored once in the first period.

Nashville took the lead on a power-play goal by Stevenson, when Marek Zidlicky's shot from the blue line deflected in off Stevenson. Detroit's Kirk Maltby was off for interference, a penalty that wiped out an apparent goal by the Red Wings' Darren McCarty.

``I thought it should have been a goal,'' said Lewis.

Detroit tied it with a power-play goal when Shanahan scored on a one-time shot from along the goal line off a cross-crease pass from Tomas Holmstrom.

Curtis Joseph made 27 saves in his second start for Detroit since returning from a sprained ankle.

``It's a tough place to come in, but we got a point,'' said Nashville coach Barry Trotz. ``To come into `The Joe' and get a point, we'll take it. Obviously we would like two.''

But Shanahan made sure that didn't happen
