Pittsburgh Penguins 3, New York Islanders 2 FINAL OT

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) _ The young Pittsburgh Penguins are going through many growing pains this season. They've finally finished a week they can feel good about.

Ryan Malone scored 2:45 into overtime to give the Penguins a come-from-behind 3-2 victory Sunday over the New York Islanders.

Malone picked up a rebound of Alexei Morozov's shot and beat Garth Snow to give the Penguins their second overtime victory in three games after losing a team-record 18 straight overall (0-17-0-1).

``We seem to be moving the puck well,'' Malone said. ``We're also playing with more confidence.''

They haven't won in regulation since winning at Philadelphia on Jan. 12 and have dropped an NHL-record 14 straight at home.

``Nobody expects us to make the playoffs or win the Stanley Cup this season, but give it a year or so down the road, and as we grow as a team, we'll be better.''

Pittsburgh ended its road trip 2-1 and the Penguins will try to earn their first home victory since Dec. 29 when they play the Islanders again on Tuesday. New York started the Penguins' home losing streak with 6-1 win on New Year's Eve.

Tomas Surovy and Ric Jackman also scored for the Penguins, who got 38 saves from Andy Chiodo. They beat Phoenix on Wednesday and then lost at San Jose on Friday.

``I can't figure it out completely, because the game we played our best from start to finish, we lost,'' Penguins coach Ed Olczyk said. ``We've been playing hard like this just about all season, and recently, we've been rewarded.''

Janne Niinimaa and Oleg Kvasha scored and Snow made 20 saves for the eighth-place Islanders, two points behind Montreal in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

``It doesn't matter who we're playing,'' Islanders forward Jason Blake said. ``We have to play with urgency for a full 60 minutes.''

The Penguins killed off four penalties in the first period, including a two-man disadvantage that lasted 1:28 and yielded only one shot. But Pittsburgh gave up a goal on the Islanders' last shot of the period, a drive from the right point by Niinimaa with 5.2 seconds left.

``Our power play just wasn't clicking,'' Islanders defenseman Adrian Aucoin said.

The lack of power-play scoring left New York coach Steve Stirling frustrated.

``The power play failed us, big time,'' Stirling said. ``The game should have been over in the first period.''

Surovy tied it 68 seconds into the middle period. Milan Kraft won a faceoff back to Surovy, whose one-timer struck the crossbar and dropped in behind Snow.

The Islanders took back the lead during Pittsburgh's first power-play chance. Chiodo stopped Kvasha's initial shot from the left side, but Kvasha knocked the rebound in at 12:14 for his career-best 14th goal.

Pittsburgh fared much better on its next power play, scoring four seconds into the advantage to tie it with 34.9 seconds left in the period.

The Islanders will be looking for a better performance in Tuesday's rematch.

``If the effort is there, the execution will be there and get better,'' Blake said. ``We have to play 60 minutes as hard as we possibly can, and keep moving forward. We can't worry about who's behind us or who's ahead of us.

``Today we're a playoff team, but that could change in an instant, so we have to just worry about ourselves, and the best way to keep it going is by winning.''
