Tampa Bay Lightning 2, Ottawa Senators 5 FINAL

Tuesday, 08.16.2011 / 5:56 AM

Associated Press

OTTAWA (AP) -- The Ottawa Senators are playing with plenty of confidence.

Marian Hossa had two goals and an assist, and the Senators defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2 on Tuesday night to improve to 8-0-2 in their last 10 games.

Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza and Todd White had the other goals for Ottawa, which won its fifth straight game.

Martin Prusek made a surprise start after Patrick Lalime was sidelined by back spasms before the warmup and made 27 saves.

Martin St. Louis and Nolan Pratt scored for the Lightning, who got 22 saves from Nikolai Khabibulin.

The biggest difference was special teams. The Senators were 3-for-5 with the man advantage while the Lightning were 0-for-3.

"The penalty kill didn't come through," Lightning coach John Tortorella said. "It was everybody, including the goaltender."

Tortorella was not his usual talkative self after the game. He felt his team had chances but just couldn't compete with the surging Senators.

"The first month and a half we didn't play well at home, and if you want to be on top you've got to play well at home," Alfredsson said. "It was important for us when we had this stretch to make the most of it.

"We pushed each other."

Ottawa opened the scoring at 7:16 of the first period with a power-play goal when Alfredsson beat Khabibulin with a shot from the point.

Tampa Bay tied it at 13:04 when St. Louis took a great drop pass from Vincent Lecavalier and tucked a shot past a helpless Prusek.

The Senators regained the lead at 5:33 of the second as Hossa picked up a rebound in front of the net and easily scored on his backhand when Khabibulin was caught out of position.

"We didn't do a good job of getting to the front of the net," Lightning defenseman Dan Boyle said. "We weren't moving guys.

"The defense didn't do a good job."

Seconds later it appeared the Lightning tied it on a shot by Brad Richards, but the replay showed the puck never crossed the line.

Ottawa made it 3-1 on a power-play goal by Spezza at 7:44, who put in a high shot over Khabibulin's right shoulder.

"We focused on (the power play) before the game," Spezza said. "I guess it paid off."

Tampa Bay cut the lead to one as Pratt scored his first of the season at 10:28 of the second period, but Ottawa went ahead 4-2 when White tipped in Zdeno Chara's point shot at 17:25.

The line of Alfredsson, White and Peter Schaefer has been the most productive through the 10-game streak, combining for 27 points (12 goals, 15 assists).

"I think all of us are playing better as a line," Alfredsson said. "We're cycling the puck better and it's a line that complements each other."

Hossa scored his second of the game during a power play at 16:52 of the third.
