Bartulis will be representing Latvia in his first Olympics as one of two NHL players on the Latvian team. Bartulis played for Latvia at the 2009 World Championship, helping them reach the quarterfinals.
He also represented Latvia at World Under-18 Championship in 2004 where he finished second on his team in scoring with five points in five games.
In 2005, Bartulis led all Latvian defensemen with seven points in five games as Latvia won the Group A division of the World Junior Championship to earn a spot at the 2006 World Junior Championship.
You forget how good [Nieuwendyk] was. You hear the points and stuff and you almost forget until they kind of walk you through his career, and that was really cool for me. I might have felt it a little more than some of the other guys because he was one of my favorites growing up, but that was very cool and I'm honored to have been a part of it. I had chills the entire ceremony.
