A two-time U.S. National Junior Team member at the World Junior Championships (2002, 2003), Whitney has also played for the U.S. at the 2001 IIHF World Under-18 Championship, collecting nine points (2-7-9) in 20 games in a Team USA uniform.
In 2000-01, he played for the U.S. National Under-18 Team, part of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, and registered 40 points (9-31-40). His 40 points, ranks sixth in NTDP history among defensemen for a season.
