They played summer hockey together for six years.

He played on a line with Brendan Shanahan and Jarome Iginla in his first All-Star Game (2002 in Los Angeles). He sat next to Mario Lemieux in the North America All-Star locker room. Thornton on the experience: "Early in the contest, coach (Pat) Quinn tapped me and Iginla on the shoulders, meaning our shift was to begin. Lemieux was on the ice, however, so me and Jarome smiled, shook our heads, and stayed put. The first shift, we didn't want to take Mario off. So we were like, 'No, we'll let him change. We're not taking his ice time.' So we just waited a little bit longer. He was patting us to go and we were like, 'Not a chance'."

More on his first All-Star Game in 2002: "What a great time I had here. It was a great experience. I'm sure next week sometime this whole experience will kick in for me, but it's surreal right now. Every time we got back to the bench, we were just howling at each other. It was so fun. I always thought it was going to be good but it was just fantastic. The guys were so complimentary. I got some sticks. I got Mario's stick and Shanahan's stick. I was like a kid in a candy store."

In the off-season, he spends a month in Davos, Switzerland, skating and training, using the mile-high elevation to his benefit.

His first hockey memory is playing in the backyard in St. Thomas, Ontario with his father and brothers and his first hockey team was with the St. Thomas Minor Hockey Association.

HE SAID IT
On the coach that set him on the right track: "Well, I've had some real, real good coaches. But I think probably Mike Keenan, as soon as he started coaching me, he turned on a switch, I guess you would say. Really after that I decided I was going to be a good professional and try to be the best player I could be. I think it was my fourth year in the League, kind of turned on that light bulb and got me going (to) realize my potential."

On his childhood playoff heroes: "My playoff heroes ... I loved the Oilers growing up. Obviously Jari Kurri, Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky, Paul Coffey and Grant Fuhr. Those were my guys. That was my team. After winning so many Stanley Cups, they were the dynasty that I always followed."

THEY SAID IT
San Jose Sharks teammate Devin Setoguchi: "When he's out there throwing passes you have to be ready at all times because he'll find you. When you think he won't find you, he'll put the puck on your stick. My first two goals in the NHL were great passes from behind the net, and it wasn't very hard for me to put them in the net."

San Jose GM Doug Wilson: "Broken toe, broken finger, strep throat ... didn't miss a day of practice (last season). I went to our trainers and asked what was going on, and they said he simply refused to take a day off ... it's amazing to watch him. He kills penalties. He plays physical. He plays both ends of the rink."

IN THE NEWS
Thornton: A new Ironman

VIDEO FEATURES
Bay Area Sports: The Game of Risk

Career All-Star Game Statistics

SEASON

TEAM

Score

R

GP

G

A

PTS

+/-

PIM

PP

SH

GW

SOG

2001-02

N. Quote of the Day

You don't see many. The [Drew] Doughtys, the [P.K.] Subbans, those are guys that create offense from the back and then on top of that ability, the size that he has. In the West you play against some pretty big players, and being able to clear the crease and contain the [Ryan] Getzlafs and the [Corey] Perrys and [Anze] Kopitars and players like that, we're excited about him going back there.

— Sharks general manager Doug Wilson on Brent Burns returning back to defense
