Cammalleri wins Saturday's fantasy scoring crown
By Rocky Bonanno  - NHL.com Staff Writer
For only the fourth time in NHL history, and the second this season, all 30 teams were in action on the same day last Saturday. And for the second time this season, fantasy owners had a bench full of active players. What a waste of points, but the day's action also posed a challenging test of advance scouting and analysis, testing the acumen of fantasy owners worldwide on a level playing field.

The big winners of the night were fantasy owners of Montreal's Mike Cammalleri, who scored Oct. 24-highs of 3 goals -- including the overtime winner -- and 4 points in a 5-4 home win against the Rangers. It would be hard to imagine that Cammalleri owners -- he is owned in 97 percent of all Yahoo! leagues -- would have had the renowned goal scorer on their bench, so his outburst is really no surprise. Cammalleri's hat trick was the sixth recorded in the NHL this season.

"I think most goal scorers tend to produce in bunches," Cammalleri told Montreal's Web site. "I just go out there trying to score on every shift."

One point behind Cammalleri on the score sheet were Calgary's Rene Bourque (1-2-3), Philadelphia's Daniel Briere (2-1-3), Anaheim's Ryan Getzlaf (0-3-3), Los Angeles' Anze Kopitar (0-3-3), San Jose's Patrick Marleau (2-1-3), and Rick Nash (2-1-3) and Antoine Vermette (1-2-3) of Columbus.

From that group, only Getzlaf (98), Kopitar (93), Marleau (97) and Nash (99) are owned in more than 90 percent of all Yahoo! leagues. The production of Vermette, at only 9 percent, was highly wasted. Bourque (60) and Briere (63) were hit and miss across the Yahoo! fantasy community.

Those that scored 2 goals on Saturday night -- there were 10 of them not including Cammalleri -- ranged from All-Stars (Dustin Brown, Shane Doan, Marleau, Nash) to players who should become popular free agent pickups in the coming days (Nigel Dawes, Mason Raymond, Jarret Stoll, Jakub Voracek). The latter four were owned in less than 10 percent of all Yahoo! leagues at the time of their outbursts.

Red-hot Anze Kopitar (93 percent) recorded 3 assists for the Kings and took over the League scoring lead from Alex Ovechkin. Kopitar's fifth multi-point game of the season -- and his second straight three-point game -- left him with 8 goals and 19 points through 11 games. Also with 3 assists for the night was Anaheim's Ryan Getzlaf (98 percent), who unlike Kopitar was struggling heading into the day. Getzlaf's 3 assists nearly doubled his season point total and lifted him to 1 goal and 7 points through nine games.

Forwards totaled 20 power-play goals on Saturday -- led by two from Brown -- and there were two shorthanded goals, from Bourque and Daniel Alfredsson (95 percent).

Philadelphia's Jeff Carter (99 percent) tried his darndest to score with a one-day high of 11 shots on goals, but best he could muster were 2 assists.

If you were paying attention to a recent forward line change by the Flyers, you might have known that tough-guy winger Arron Asham was promoted to the No. 1 unit late week, playing with Mike Richards and Simon Gagne. Asham has parlayed that good fortune into a career-high three-game goal streak, which he continued on Saturday. However, he remains owned in only 2 percent of all Yahoo! leagues.

At the other end of the spectrum, mega-watt star center Vincent Lecavalier (98 percent) of Tampa Bay scored his long-awaited first goal of the season on Saturday in a shootout loss to Buffalo. I won't blame any Lecavalier fantasy owners if they held the struggling Lightning player out of their lineup with so many other options available.

Also from Tampa Bay, right winger Martin St. Louis (98 percent) recorded 1 assist to extend his NHL-leading streaks for assists and points to eight and nine games, respectively.

Two other notable point streaks were extended. Marian Gaborik of the Rangers had a goal and an assist in a loss at Montreal, bringing his streak to eight games. Naturally, he is widely owned at 98 percent. But the same can't be said of Colorado's 18-year-old rookie center Ryan O'Reilly, who had 1 assist in a win against Detroit. O'Reilly (6 percent) extended his point streak to seven games.

Brad Richards (67 percent) of Dallas had 2 assists and Jason Spezza (94 percent) of Ottawa recorded 1 assist to increase their assist streaks to five games.

On Saturday, defensemen accounted for 11 goals; three came on the power play from Lubomir Visnovsky (44 percent), Marc-Andre Bergeron (7 percent) and Scott Niedermayer (95 percent), and Radek Martinek (zero percent) of the Islanders scored shorthanded. There were 11 2-point performances by defensemen, and seven blue liners had 2 assists. Columbus defender Fedor Tyutin (47 percent) had an especially dominant contest, scoring a goal and an assist and recording a plus-4 in a victory at Anaheim.

Ian White (6 percent) of Toronto and Marek Zidlicky (67 percent) of Minnesota led all defensemen with seven shots apiece, but neither produced a point.

The last time all 30 NHL teams were in action on one day -- Oct. 3, 2009 -- the 690 players accounted for 96 goals. Last Saturday, the 15 games totaled 87 goals.

No. 1 goaltenders -- those that occupy the top spot on their respective teams depth chart -- accounted for 14 of the 15 victories on Saturday, so that bode well for fantasy owners. The lone exception was Jaroslav Halak (15 percent) of Montreal who defeated the Rangers in place of primary starter Carey Price (78 percent).

That high winning percentage by starters may have had something to do with their opposition. Of the 15 losses, eight were pinned on goalies who are considered backups -- Brian Elliott, Dwayne Roloson, Johan Hedberg, Joey MacDonald, Ty Conklin, Dan Ellis, Jimmy Howard, and Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

The only shutout of the night was recorded by the very inconsistent Cristobal Huet (85 percent) of the Blackhawks who made 27 saves to blank the offensively-inept Predators in Chicago. It was Huet's first victory since Oct. 15.

But the best goalie performance was arguably turned in by Colorado's Craig Anderson (81 percent), who made a single-day high of 48 saves to defeat Detroit 3-1. It was the second time this season that Anderson had faced 40 or more shots in a game, and he's won them both.
