Kreider looks to build off year of success

Not many hockey players at any level had a better season in 2009-10 than Chris Kreider. But the New York Rangers prospect is determined to use that season as a foundation for better things.

Kreider's good fortune really started in June in Montreal, when the Rangers made the big, speedy center the 19th pick of the 2009 Entry Draft. From there he won a gold medal at the World Junior Championship, an NCAA title at Boston College and earned a chance to play with the U.S. at the World Championship in Germany.

"It was such a whirlwind year, I didn't want it to end," Kreider told NHL.com. "It was a great year, but that's behind me now; I don't want that to be the best year of my career. I want to keep going and keep doing big things."

Top rookie Puempel headlines Canada's Hlinka camp

Last year, Tyler Seguin used the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament as a springboard to a season that saw him tie for the Ontario Hockey League scoring title and become the second pick of the 2010 Entry Draft.

Will someone else use the tournament in the same way? Well, players from Canada will have their chance when the men's under-18 summer evaluation camp is held July 31-Aug. 3. The roster for nation's entry to the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, to be held Aug. 9-14 in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, will come from this camp.

Belleville Bulls coach George Burnett, who will coach the Hlinka team, will oversee the camp, along with assistant coaches Jim Hiller (Tri-City Americans) and Ron Choules (Acadie-Bathurst Titan).

For most 17-year-olds, summertime means spending time with friends and staying out late. Connor Murphy, a defenseman who will represent the U.S. at the upcoming Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, has other plans.

He's at the rink or in the gym every day trying to get ahead of the competition as he prepares for the elite international summer hockey tournament, which will be held Aug. 9-14 in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Beyond that, he has a full season with the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 squad to look forward to.

"I'm trying to treat my summer like I'm in-season right now and get in shape as much as possible so that when the season comes, I'll actually be a step ahead of everyone," Murphy told NHL.com.
