Andreas Athanasiou scored a pair of goals and Kerby Rychel had a goal and an assist to pace the Canadian Under-18 select team to a 6-0 victory over Switzerland on Wednesday in preliminary-round action of the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament at Alcaplast Arena in Breclav, Czech Republic.
Canada, which has now won two straight by a combined 12-1 after dropping a 5-1 decision to Sweden on Monday, will advance to Friday's semifinal round. The medal round will be held Saturday.
The Canadians opened a 4-0 lead in the first period. Derrick Pouliot (Portland Winterhawks) and Rychel (Windsor Spitfires) connected in a span of eight seconds less than two minutes into the game before Scott Laughton (Oshawa Generals) and Athanasiou (London Knights) scored in a span of 3:19 later in the period.
Goalies Daniel Altshuller (Napean Riders) and Domenic Graham (Drummondville Voltegieurs) combined on the shutout. Hunter Shinkaruk (Medicine Hat Tigers) converted a penalty shot 14:46 into the second to extend the lead to 5-0 and Athanasiou scored off a feed from Morgan Rielly (Moose Jaw Warriors) 9:05 into the third.
