Stamkos named cover athlete for EA NHL '12

Wednesday, 06.22.2011 / 7:57 PM / 2011 NHL Awards

NHL.com

LAS VEGAS -- Gamers take note. The new cover athlete for EA NHL 12, which will be in stories Sept. 13, is Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos.

Stamkos follows a two-year run on the EA cover by Chicago Blackhawks stars. Patrick Kane was the 2010 cover athlete, followed last season by teammate and fellow Stanley Cup champion Jonathan Toews.

"I am very excited to be part of illustrious group of guys (who have been on the cover)," said Stamkos, who added the EA NHL game has "probably been at the top of my Christmas list since I was six years old."

Breaking down the NHL Awards finalists

Wednesday, 06.22.2011 / 3:45 PM / 2011 NHL Awards

Corey Masisak - NHL.com Staff Writer

The best and brightest of the NHL will be on display Wednesday night at the Palms Casino and Resort during the 2011 NHL Awards show (7 p.m. ET., Versus, CBC).

The event will celebrate the best performances of the 2010-11 season, and expect the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins to be well-represented during the show. Who will win some of the NHL's most coveted awards? Let's take a look and make some educated guesses.

HART MEMORIAL TROPHY (MVP)

Finalists: Corey Perry, Ducks; Daniel Sedin, Canucks; Martin St. Louis, Lightning

This should be a pretty close vote between Sedin, the Art Ross winner, and Perry, the Rocket Richard winner. Will Perry's late-season surge be enough to overtake Sedin, who could make it two MVPs in a row for the family after twin brother Henrik won last season? WINNER: Corey Perry

Star-studded treatment for NHL's best at Awards

Tuesday, 06.21.2011 / 11:30 PM / 2011 NHL Awards

Shawn P. Roarke - NHL.com Senior Managing Editor

LAS VEGAS -- In a town known for its big names and bigger-than-life performances, the National Hockey League will honor its best and brightest Wednesday night in a star-studded affair at the Pearl Theater at the Palms Casino.

The 2011 Awards show (7 p.m. ET, Versus, CBC) brings the game’s best players together with stars from the entertainment world in a celebration of a historic 2010-11 season -- a season that opened with the Boston Bruins as one of six teams in Europe and ended with those same Bruins doing a victory lap with the Stanley Cup last Wednesday after a Game 7 triumph against the Canucks in Vancouver.

Two of those Bruins, perhaps the two biggest Bruins, are here hoping to add to their hardware haul.

Hart candidate Perry reflects on fantastic finish

Tuesday, 06.21.2011 / 11:01 PM / 2011 NHL Awards

Shawn P. Roarke - NHL.com Senior Managing Editor

LAS VEGAS -- Anaheim’s Corey Perry is among the three finalists for the Hart Memorial Trophy at Wednesday’s 2011 NHL Awards, earning his nomination on the strength of a finishing kick for the ages.

In his final 16 games of the regular season, Perry potted 19 goals and added 11 assists as he helped carry his Anaheim Ducks into the Stanley Cup Playoffs and a first-round match against the Nashville Predators.

"I think it was one of those things where you get on a roll and things just go your way," Perry said Tuesday at the Palms Casino, the site of Wednesday’s show. "You can’t go out and plan on doing that. You just go out and do your thing, and it was a quite a good roll that that happened in the last month and a half. It was fun."

Shawn P. Roarke - NHL.com Senior Managing Editor

LAS VEGAS -- Time has not healed all wounds for the Vancouver Canucks.

Less than a week removed from a Game 7 loss in the Stanley Cup Final, a contingent of Canucks descended Tuesday afternoon upon Las Vegas for the 2011 NHL Awards show at the Pearl Theater in the Palms Casino on Wednesday afternoon (7 p.m. ET).

Ryan Kesler, Daniel Sedin, Roberto Luongo and coach Alain Vigneault are all in town, hoping to take home some hardware to at least partially erase some of the sting of losing the Stanley Cup in a winner-take-all Game 7.

"There is only one trophy we play for,” said Kesler, who is nominated for the Frank Selke Trophy as best defensive forward.

NHL '12 cover athlete to be announced at Awards

Friday, 06.17.2011 / 9:00 AM / 2011 NHL Awards

David Kalan - NHL.com Staff Writer

Last spring, Chicago's Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane pulled off quite the feat. Sure, there was that Stanley Cup title in which they both figured prominently -- Toews winning the Conn Smythe and Kane potting the Cup-winner -- but what was perhaps under the radar was that when Jonathan Toews was named the cover athlete for EA SPORTS NHL '11, it was the first time that teammates took the honor in back-to-back years.

No one can say for certainty if Patrick Sharp or Marian Hossa will give the Blackhawks an EA cover hat trick, or if someone such as Boston's Tim Thomas could be the second straight cover athlete to receive the honor after lifting the Cup for the first time.

But it will be somebody. And at the 2011 NHL Awards, we'll all find out who.

For the first time since EA SPORTS began featuring specific cover athletes on its NHL video game franchise in 1997, the company will be announcing its NHL '12 cover athlete on Wednesday, June 22 at the 2011 NHL Awards, which are being held at the Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas (7 p.m. ET, VERSUS in the U.S. and CBC in Canada). The announcement will be with a video presentation during the Awards show, which is being hosted for the second time by comedian Jay Mohr.
