2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game

Howe packs in the fans at NHL Fan Fair

OTTAWA -- Who is the one player with the ability to match the biggest fan event during All-Star Weekend?

Gordie Howe is about as big as it gets.

Mr. Hockey was in attendance Friday afternoon at the Scotiabank NHL Fan Fair at the Ottawa Convention Centre to sign autographs in conjunction with trading-card company Panini America. The one-hour session drew such a crowd that the lines had to be closed before Howe could take his spot on the podium.

Lion's Den opens at Children's Hospital in Ottawa

Friday, 01.27.2012 / 4:10 PM / 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game

Tal Pinchevsky - NHL.com Staff Writer

OTTAWA -- At first glance, it might look like a scene from an arcade or a child's birthday party: brightly lit walls surrounding a playroom in which kids play interactive games online or video games on a row of Xbox consoles.

But this isn't just any room, and these aren't just any kids. It all starts with the sign hanging at the far end of the room that reads, "The biggest assist happens off the ice."

In a partnership between the National Hockey League, the Ottawa Senators and Companions in Courage Foundation, Pat LaFontaine's charitable endeavor, the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario opened the NHL All-Star Legacy Playroom on Friday. The dynamic, state-of-the-art facility was opened to CHEO's young patients as part of Ottawa's All-Star Game festivities.

Team Chara, Team Alfredsson select Skills lineups

Friday, 01.27.2012 / 3:48 PM / 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

OTTAWA -- Soon after Zdeno Chara walked into the room, he whipped out his phone and sent a text message to teammate Tyler Seguin. Chara had to ask Seguin if he would be cool doing the All-State NHL Breakaway Challenge on Saturday night at the 2012 Molson Canadian All-Star Skills Competition.

Chara and his assistant captain, Joffrey Lupul, didn't necessarily need help in picking which player does what for Team Chara in the competition at Scotiabank Place on Saturday night, but they also wanted to avoid putting any of the guys in an awkward, uncomfortable position.

Owner embraces Sens' time in hockey spotlight

Friday, 01.27.2012 / 3:46 PM / 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game

Tal Pinchevsky - NHL.com Staff Writer

When Eugene Melnyk bought the Ottawa Senators in 2003, he wasn't just happy to provide stability to an emerging franchise. He had big plans for the team and the city. All those dreams have coincided nicely in the days leading up to the 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game, an event in which his team and its players will figure prominently.

"When I bought the franchise, one of the things on our mind was to have an All-Star Game," Melnyk told NHL.com.

In order to get that coveted mid-season classic, Melnyk first had to convince Commissioner Gary Bettman that Ottawa was capable of hosting the event.

Cody Hodgson looks forward to catching up with old friends at the 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game.

Catching up to them remains a work in progress for the Canucks' rookie.

Hodgson grew up playing alongside fellow All-Stars like Steven Stamkos and John Tavares, and knows others like Jamie Benn and Jordan Eberle well from their time on Canada's World Junior Championship teams. He surpassed several on the junior stage, even winning Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year ahead of Tavares just before Tavares was selected with the No. 1 pick by the New York Islanders in 2009, only to fall behind when a back injury threatened his career.

Speak softly and carry a big stick.

The first part comes naturally to Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler.

For his Vancouver teammates, the hardest part of setting an over-under for how many times the big Swedish blueliner would speak during his first All-Star Weekend was whether there should even be a number at all.

"At the All-Star Game, probably zero," Daniel Sedin said. "Take the under."

"Other than to the (Sedin) twins and Coho (Cody Hodgson), I say twice maybe all weekend," added goalie Roberto Luongo. "But he might talk to other Swedes."

Datsyuk experiences all-time first by going first

Friday, 01.27.2012 / 12:24 PM / 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game

In his illustrious NHL career, Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk has accomplished some amazing, memorable feats.

Thursday night, however, was a new one even for him.

With the first pick in the NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft, Team Chara captain Zdeno Chara made Datsyuk the first selection.

"Never in my life I was picked first," Datsyuk told NHL.com/ru, the NHL's Russian-language site. "Ever since I was a child playing pick-up games outdoors, I was picked closer to the end or dead last."

Alfredsson uses draft strategy to keep Senators united

Thursday, 01.26.2012 / 11:37 PM / 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game

Erin Nicks - NHL.com Correspondent

GATINEAU, Que. -- Daniel Alfredsson kept his crew together on Thursday night at the 2012 NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft.

All four representatives from the Senators were selected by Team Alfredsson. After claiming earlier in the week that he would take his teammate and fellow Swede, Erik Karlsson, with the first pick, Alfredsson did just that. Prior to the draft, Karlsson spoke to the media and jokingly said he would "be [mad]" if he wasn't selected by his captain.

Team Chara selection left Price flustered

Thursday, 01.26.2012 / 11:24 PM / 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game

Arpon Basu - Managing Editor LNH.com

GATINEAU, Que. --  Carey Price's experience at Thursday night's 2012 Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft got off to a clumsy start, and just snowballed from there.

When Price was selected by Team Chara with the No. 13 pick of the draft, it would be fair to say that the Montreal Canadiens goaltender was caught a bit off guard.

"I didn't know I was picked!" Price said. "I think Hartsy (Scott Hartnell) tapped me on the leg and said, 'That's you.' So I didn't even know, and when I got out there I didn't even see the big Zdeno standing there, all 6-foot-10 of him."
