Shanahan sees the fun in new ASG format

Wednesday, 11.10.2010 / 3:50 PM / 2011 NHL All-Star Game - Presented by Discover

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

"That was the concept here, to make it fun and entertaining for the players and let that translate to all of our spectators. If the players are entertained and enthused, the fans are going to be entertained and that was the focus on all of this." -- Brendan Shanahan Vice President Hockey and Business Development for the NHL

Brendan Shanahan wants the all-stars to feel as though they're back in their old neighborhoods when they get to Raleigh, N.C., on Jan. 28. He wants them to remember what it was like getting ready for a road hockey game with the kids from the block, what it felt like when captains were chosen and had the responsibility of picking sides for the game.

There were nerves as they stood in the cold and waited to have one of the two captains point in their direction, to say, "You, you're on my team." There was excitement when they got chosen. There were debates as to who should go ahead of who and why. There was the fear of being the last man standing. There was strategy among the dueling captains.

'Canes reveal 2011 NHL All-Star game logo

Monday, 07.26.2010 / 1:32 PM / 2011 NHL All-Star Game - Presented by Discover
Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today revealed the logo for the 2011 NHL All-Star Game, to be held Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at the RBC Center. The team also announced that the tallest building in Raleigh, the RBC Plaza on Fayetteville St., will display a 5,000 square-foot window treatment promoting All-Star Weekend.

The 2011 All-Star Game logo was designed and created by the NHL and is property of the NHL. Here is the league's description of its design:

The primary color of the logo is a tribute to the Hurricanes and their legion of fans, the 'Caniacs,' who display their team pride by wearing red during home games at the RBC Center. Also, the holding shape is consistent with the Hurricanes' primary logo. With the 2011 NHL All-Star Game being played in the state capital of North Carolina, Raleigh, and the popularity of the Hurricanes stretching well beyond the Triangle, inspiration for the banners along the top and bottom of the logo is derived from the official flag of the state of North Carolina."

Quote of the Day

We want to make sure that whoever makes our team really makes our team by earning it and not putting them in situations where they get preference because of their status as a first-round pick or whatever it might be. That's not going to happen. Everybody has to earn their way on our team.

— Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen on the team's prospects at development camp
