HELSINKI -- Auston Matthews, the likely top pick of the 2016 NHL Draft, had two goals and two assists to lead the United States to a 10-1 victory against Switzerland in a Group A preliminary-round game at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship in Helsinki Ice Hall in Helsinki, Finland.

Fellow top draft prospect Matthew Tkachuk and Christian Dvorak (Arizona Coyotes), Zachary Werenski (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Colin White (Ottawa Senators) had three-point games. The win moved the U.S. into second place in Group A with six points, three behind first-place Sweden.

Nick Schmaltz (Chicago Blackhawks), Ryan Donato (Boston Bruins) and Brandon Carlo (Boston Bruins) also scored for the U.S.

Timo Meier (San Jose Sharks) scored for Switzerland, which finished fifth in Group A with one point. Switzerland will play Belarus in the relegation round.

The U.S. finishes preliminary-round play Thursday against Denmark (9 a.m. ET; NHLN).

United States center Auston Matthews, who is projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, keyed an offensive outburst Wednesday with two goals and two assists to lead the U.S. to a 10-1 victory against Switzerland in a Group A preliminary-round game of the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship at Helsinki Ice Hall in Finland.

The Americans rebounded from a 1-0 loss against Sweden on Monday with their biggest offensive showing in four years at the tournament to solidify a spot in the quarterfinal round. The last time the United States scored as many as 10 goals came against Latvia in a 12-2 victory at the 2012 WJC in Calgary.

The U.S. played without top-line right wing Alexander DeBrincat, who is day-to-day because of an upper-body injury. DeBrincat, who stars for Erie in the Ontario Hockey League, is an A-rated skater on NHL Central Scouting's November players to watch list.

Colin White, selected in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators, replaced DeBrincat on the top line alongside Matthews and left wing Matthew Tkachuk, also an A-rated skater on Central Scouting's November list.

Sweden forward William Nylander will not play against Canada in the final preliminary-round game of the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship at Helsinki Ice Hall in Finland on Thursday.

Nylander, who sustained an upper-body injury in the tournament opener, will miss his third straight game. He could return to the lineup at some point, according to sportsnet.ca. Sweden is in first place in Group A with two wins and six points.

"Everything is still positive and he is feeling really good," Swedish doctors told sportsnet.ca.

The Canadian junior team escaped a monumental upset Tuesday with a 3-2 shootout win against Switzerland at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship.

In 20 previous games, the Swiss had never defeated Canada at the WJC and the point that accompanied this gutsy effort kept alive their slim hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals. They need a three-point regulation victory against the United States on Wednesday and Denmark to lose its final two games against Sweden and the U.S.

The two-point victory hurts the Canadians (five points) in the Group A standings, but they avoided disaster when captain Brayden Point (Tampa Bay Lightning) and Matthew Barzal (New York Islanders) scored in the shootout.

Canadian goalie Mackenzie Blackwood (New Jersey Devils) stopped Pius Suter and Timo Meier (San Jose Sharks) in the two attempts Blackwood faced.

HELSINKI -- Mitchell Marner (Toronto Maple Leafs), and Dylan Strome (Arizona Coyotes) had a goal and an assist apiece as Canada rolled past Denmark 6-1 on Monday at the world junior hockey championship.

Anthony Beauvillier (New York Islanders), John Quenneville (New Jersey Devils), Mathew Barzal (New York Islanders) and Lawson Crouse (Florida Panthers) also scored for Canada (1-1) at Helsinki Ice Hall. Mason McDonald (Calgary Flames) stopped 10 shots in what is likely his last start of the preliminary round.

It's expected McDonald will give way to Mackenzie Blackwood (New Jersey Devils) on Tuesday when the Canadians face Switzerland (0-2). Blackwood had to serve the final two games of an eight-game suspension before suiting up for Canada.

Alexander True scored for Denmark (1-1), while Mathias Seldrup made 52 saves in net.

Sweden goalie Linus Soderstrom channeled his inner Henrik Lundqvist against the United States on Monday at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Soderstrom, a New York Islanders prospect, idolizes Lundqvist and certainly came up with a King Henrik-like performance with 46 saves in a 1-0 victory.

Soderstrom was particularly sharp on the penalty kill. The U.S. peppered the Swedish goalie with 20 shots in 14:48 of power-play time, but he kept the Americans at bay as they went 0-for-8 in man-advantage situations.

"We did everything but score," U.S. coach Ron Wilson said. "We created opportunities and had 46 shots on goal, but you have to give their goalie credit."

Sweden forward William Nylander won't play Monday against the United States (9 a.m. ET; NHLN) because of a head injury, but a team doctor said Sunday there's hope the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect will play again at some point during the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Nylander left Sweden's 8-3 win Saturday against Switzerland at 15:37 of the first period after a check to the head by Switzerland forward Chris Egli. Egli received a game misconduct for the hit, and Sunday he received a three-game suspension from the World Junior Championship Disciplinary Panel.

"[Nylander] is walking around. He's at the hotel. Let's see how he does [Monday]," Sweden team doctor Per Adolf Bergsten told TSN on Sunday. "We'll take it day by day. Today is a rest day. He can't skate tomorrow. Hopefully he'll be back in the tournament. We have a timeline but I can't tell you what it is."

Sweden forward Alexander Nylander, William's brother and an A-rated prospect for the 2016 NHL Draft, said in a video published by TSN: "He's feeling better today. Hopefully he can recover and be back as soon as possible. … Hopefully he can be back for [the quarterfinals]."

Bruins say Pastrnak can join Czech Republic at WJC

Saturday, 12.26.2015 / 8:51 PM / 2016 World Junior Championship

Matt Kalman - NHL.com Correspondent

BOSTON -- Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak will be made available to the Czech Republic for the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship, if the Bruins don't need him because of injuries, when the NHL roster freeze ends Monday, general manager Don Sweeney said Saturday.

Pastrnak, who has been out since Oct. 31 because of a nondisplaced fracture in his foot, recently completed a two-game conditioning stint with Providence of the American Hockey League.

"He is fully healthy and now we need to get him back to where he can impact our lineup," Sweeney said. "And if indeed he does join the [Czech] team on the 28th over in Finland, we think that based on last year, his experience there and rolling out of that tournament with the confidence that he had, that he'll come back to the full level that he had really had gotten to last year in impacting our lineup."
