Bruins' Rask should take home Vezina Trophy

Thursday, 04.10.2014 / 3:00 AM / Trophy Tracker

Corey Masisak - NHL.com Staff Writer

With the 2013-14 regular season rapidly coming to a close, NHL.com looks at some of its biggest storylines and award contenders.

Until last season, the Vezina Trophy belonged to the veterans of the goaltending position for much of the past two decades.

Starting with Dominik Hasek's first victory in 1994, there was an 18-season period where only twice did someone younger than 29 win the Vezina (Jim Carrey was 21 in 1996 and Jose Theodore was 25 in 2002). Sergei Bobrovsky won in his age-24 season in 2013, and it's likely someone is going to make it two in a row for the 28-and-under crowd this season.

Entering play Tuesday, the top six goaltenders in save percentage with at least 42 starts all are 27 years old or younger.

Chara's all-round efficiency makes him Norris choice

Wednesday, 04.09.2014 / 3:00 AM / Trophy Tracker

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

There are defensemen who contribute more on the score sheet than Zdeno Chara. There are defensemen who skate with the puck better than he does. All in all, there are defensemen who are just much flashier than the Boston Bruins' towering captain.

But this season there has not been a more effective defenseman in all areas of the ice than Chara, who should win the Norris Trophy for the second time in his career. He took over as the front runner for this award in March, when he helped the Bruins go 15-1-1.

Chara previously won the Norris Trophy in 2008-09, when he had 50 points, including a career-high 19 goals, in 80 games. He won't reach 50 points this season, but he has 17 goals, including a team-high 10 on the power play, and 37 points along with a plus-25 rating through 75 games (before playing Tuesday), so his offense is hardly a concern for the Bruins.

Top pick MacKinnon of Avalanche deserves Calder

Jon Lane - NHL.com Staff Writer

With the 2013-14 regular season rapidly coming to a close, NHL.com looks at some of its biggest storylines and award contenders.

During a close race for the Calder Trophy, Colorado Avalanche rookie Nathan MacKinnon often found himself mentioned in the same breath as Wayne Gretzky, even breaking a record held by "The Great One" for 34 years along the way.

Combine that with MacKinnon's standing at or near the top of most major scoring categories and his role in Colorado's stunning turnaround from Western Conference basement dwellers to legitimate Stanley Cup contenders, and the Avalanche forward is NHL.com's pick as the League's top rookie.

Avalanche's Roy deserves Jack Adams Award

Brian Compton - NHL.com Deputy Managing Editor

With the 2013-14 regular season rapidly coming to a close, NHL.com looks at some of its biggest storylines and award contenders.

After finishing with the second-fewest points in the NHL in 2012-13, the Colorado Avalanche experienced major changes in the front office and, ultimately, behind the bench last summer.

Two of the greatest players in the history of the franchise were placed in roles that would help change the culture. Joe Sakic, the former captain and all-time leading scorer, was named executive vice president of hockey operations last May.

Less than two weeks later, Sakic named Patrick Roy, the former goaltender who led them to two Stanley Cup championships, as the sixth coach in Avalanche history. He replaced Joe Sacco after the Avalanche missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for a third straight season.
