Quintal to lead NHL Department of Player Safety

The National Hockey League announced today that Stephane Quintal has been named Senior Vice President of Player Safety.

Quintal had been serving in that role on an interim basis since April 11, 2014, when Brendan Shanahan left his position as Senior Vice President of Player Safety to become the President of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Following an extensive evaluation process that included interviews with many qualified candidates, it was determined that the goals and objectives of the Department of Player Safety would be served best under Quintal's continued leadership.

NEW YORK – New York Rangers defenseman John Moore has been suspended two games for an illegal check to the head of Montreal Canadiens forward Dale Weise during Game 5 of the teams' Eastern Conference Final series in Montreal on Tuesday, May 27, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 10:41 of the third period. A match penalty for illegal check to the head was assessed to Moore.

Canadiens' Prust banned two games for interference

NEW YORK - Montreal Canadiens forward Brandon Prust has been suspended two games for interference with New York Rangers forward Derek Stepan during Game 3 of the teams' Eastern Conference Final series in New York on Thursday, May 22, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

Canadiens' Prust to have phone hearing Friday

Montreal Canadiens left wing Brandon Prust will have a phone hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday afternoon for his hit on New York Rangers center Derek Stepan during the first period at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.

No penalty was called on the play at 2:48 of the first period. Stepan briefly left the game before returning later in the first period.

On Friday, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault announced Stepan would undergo surgery for a broken jaw and there was no timetable for his return.

Rangers' Lundqvist fined for unsportsmanlike conduct

NEW YORK -- New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has been fined $5,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct during Game 6 of the Second Round Stanley Cup Playoffs series against the Pittsburgh Penguins in New York on Sunday, May 11, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 20:00 of the second period. No penalty was assessed to Lundqvist.

The fine money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Bruins' Thornton fined for unsportsmanlike conduct

NEW YORK -- Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton has been fined $2820.52, the maximum permitted under the CBA, for unsportsmanlike conduct during Game 5 of the teams' Second Round Stanley Cup Playoffs series in Boston on Saturday, May 10, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 19:13 of the third period. No penalty was assessed on the play.

The fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Blackhawks' Bollig suspended two games

NEW YORK -- Chicago Blackhawks forward Brandon Bollig has been suspended for two games for boarding Minnesota Wild defenseman Keith Ballard during Game 4 of the teams' Second Round Stanley Cup Playoffs series in Minnesota on Friday, May 9, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 17:13 of the second period. Bollig was assessed a minor penalty for boarding.

Blackhawks forward Bollig to have hearing

Chicago Blackhawks forward Brandon Bollig will have a hearing Saturday with the NHL Department of Player Safety for his hit from behind on Minnesota Wild defenseman Keith Ballard during the second period Friday at Xcel Energy Center.

The hearing is not in person.

Bollig was issued a boarding penalty on the play at 17:13 of the second period.
