Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan didn't completely rule out re-signing any unrestricted free agent Thursday, including defenseman Mike Green and forward Eric Fehr.

"We're in contact with our UFAs and we're going to have to see what the contract demands are in the end for them and what's going to work for us," MacLellan said. "We're trying to balance all of our priorities here."

However, Green and Fehr's agent told CSNwashington.com that the pair will not return to the Capitals next season.

Potential unrestricted free agents can begin negotiating terms of contracts with teams on Thursday. They can't sign a contract until noon ET on July 1, when the free agent market opens. NHL.com is examining the top potential UFAs at each position.

There is a dearth of all-stars among the forwards who could potentially become unrestricted free agents on July 1, but there is at least some depth to the group, including two players who have won the Conn Smythe Trophy and the Stanley Cup multiple times.

Here is a list of the top 14 forwards who could hit the open market next week:

The Montreal Canadiens made sure one of the top potential unrestricted free agent defensemen this year never made it to the open market when they re-signed Jeff Petry to a six-year, $33 million contract on June 2.

Petry hit it big, and now it's fair to wonder if his contract set the bar for others to come once the signing period opens at noon ET on July 1.

Top 5 five goaltenders available via free agency

The goaltending market is flush with intrigue because of potential trades that could happen this weekend at BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla., where the 2015 NHL Draft, which begins Friday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports), will be held.

At least three teams and potentially more will be looking to trade goalies, which could have a profound effect on the market for goalies who can become unrestricted free agents on July 1.

The Ottawa Senators likely will trade either Robin Lehner or Craig Anderson. The Vancouver Canucks are expected to move either Jacob Markstrom or Eddie Lack. The New York Rangers might trade backup Cam Talbot.

The Pittsburgh Penguins plan to sign Russian forward Sergei Plotnikov when free agency begins on July 1, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The Penguins also have interest in Viktor Tikhonov, who played for the Arizona Coyotes during the 2008-09 season and has spent the past four seasons with St. Petersburg of the KHL, the Tribune-Review said.

Forward Beleskey unlikely to re-sign with Ducks

Matt Beleskey is expected to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 after rejecting a contract offer from the Anaheim Ducks.

"We made an offer and they rejected it immediately," Ducks general manager Bob Murray said Tuesday. "So, I don't think there's anything else happening there. I said that when we kept him at the trade deadline, that I doubted it was going to work, and they obviously feel they're going to do a lot better.

"I'm very comfortable with the offer we made, we made a really good offer, and it's just a part of hockey now."

Dubnyk set to cash in on success, hopes it's with Wild

Tuesday, 06.23.2015 / 4:10 PM / NHL Free Agency 2015

LAS VEGAS -- After a season in which he was good enough to become a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, goalie Devan Dubnyk doesn't want much to change. Dubnyk said Tuesday he wants to stay with the Minnesota Wild and is hopeful of signing a new contract before he can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

"I want to be there and hopefully they want to have me there," Dubnyk said from the MGM Grand Garden Arena, where the 2015 NHL Awards show will take place Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN). "Nothing has changed that way, so we'll continue to go forward. It's still where I would like to be and get something done. It's been a busy time and over the next week here we'll try to get something going. We're still trying to get something done."
