NEW YORK -- As the grind of his 17th NHL regular season presses on, defenseman Dan Boyle is trying to do his part to help the New York Rangers win while coming to grips with the idea that he probably won't be winning on the ice in the NHL beyond this season.

Although he hasn't made it official, Boyle is likely going to retire at the end of this season, he told NorthJersey.com last week. He cited his desire to spend more time at home, specifically with his daughters Eastin and Wesley, who are seven and five, respectively.

Boyle, 39, said he plans to return to Northern California with his family following this season. He is in the process of building a home there. He played six seasons with the San Jose Sharks before signing a two-year contract with the Rangers prior to last season.

For Boyle, part of coming to grips with this likely being his final season in the NHL has been him having to understand and accept that his role has changed.

The latest edition features Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly:

NEW YORK -- Coach Mike Babcock's plan for Morgan Rielly is in motion and it's even resulting in some unintended production from the Toronto Maple Leafs' developing No. 1 defenseman.

Rielly is tied with fellow defenseman Dion Phaneuf for the Maple Leafs lead with 11 points through 18 games. It's not a number that jumps off the screen, but it's still a lot of points considering Babcock's plan for Rielly this season is to play him against the opposition's top lines and give him more time on the penalty kill than the power play in order to keep his focus on improving his play without the puck.

TORONTO -- Marty Turco stopped to chat and was told the interview would be strictly about goaltending, so he took a deep breath and responded.

"We could be here all day," Turco said.

All day wasn't possible. It might have happened if it was.

Turco talked Sunday with NHL.com prior to participating in the Legends Game at Air Canada Center, an annual staple of Hockey Hall of Fame Weekend. As usual, he delivered the goods over nearly 15 minutes that were less interview and more conversation with the former Dallas Stars goalie who is now working in the club's business development department.

NEWARK, N.J. -- The preseason predictions weren't kind to the New Jersey Devils. Is it possible that they also were wrong?

Instead of being thought of as a potential Stanley Cup Playoff team, the Devils were picked to be a potential NHL Draft Lottery team. They've missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs the past three seasons, and there was a general consensus among the prognosticators, regardless of newspaper, website or blog, that the Devils would make it four in a row.

Maybe not.

The Devils have won six of their past seven games after starting the season with four consecutive losses, including the first three in regulation. They are 4-1-0 on the road and 4-1 in games decided after regulation, including 2-0 in overtime.

They're playing teams close and finding ways to win, which typically is what teams on the rise that are trying to become contenders do.

The season was two games old and Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz felt his team was spinning its wheels, developing some rust.

The Capitals opened with a 5-3 win against the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 10. It was followed with a 5-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks.

"We were the last team to start playing in the regular season," Trotz said. "And we were exactly that."

The Capitals did start later than every other team in the League this season, but they're churning now, moving forward into a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN) with a five-game winning streak.

Florida Panthers defenseman Brian Campbell has reached the point in his career where he asks himself one pertinent question.

"How many years do I have left in this League?" Campbell said, rhetorically speaking.

The answer is a bit daunting for a 36-year-old who has played in 925 games, including 299 consecutive games since joining the Panthers prior to the 2011-12 season.

"I don't know," Campbell said.

That's why Campbell has one thing in mind this season.

NEW YORK -- The talk during the offseason got old, tiresome, played out. As the summer months dragged on, all Columbus Blue Jackets center Ryan Johansen wanted it was for it to be time to put up or shut up.

"Totally," Johansen told NHL.com prior to playing the New York Rangers on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

Johansen heard people around the League -- a melting pot of executives, coaches, players, media and fans -- discussing and dissecting the Blue Jackets; what they could have been last season if not for a League-high 508 man games lost to injury, and what they have a chance to be this season with the addition of left wing Brandon Saad and a stroke of good health.

Stanley Cup Playoffs or bust this season, Johansen heard people saying. Look out for Columbus, was part of the talk. The 23-year-old center had people telling him that he, Saad and Nick Foligno could form the best first line in the NHL.

TORONTO -- Properly analyzing what it means to be the team that has come close to winning the Stanley Cup two years in a row can be a difficult exercise.

One the one hand, you're close, which is better than the alternative, so that's good. On the other, close is never good enough when you're on a team that is good, has high expectations and doesn't raise the ultimate prize at the end of a long, taxing journey.

The New York Rangers have been the team that has epitomized close the past two years.

They went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014 but lost in five games to the Los Angeles Kings. They had Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final at home last season but lost 2-0 to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

It's all left a funny and yet sort of unsure feeling with captain Ryan McDonagh.

"It's better to say that you're there, that you know what you're capable of, and you know you have that opportunity with this group that we have," McDonagh said. "But it's frustrating."

How close the Rangers have gotten the past two seasons only to fall short of the ultimate goal led to some deep thoughts during the summer about the state of the team, the window of opportunity with the current core and what needs to be done to get over the hump.

TORONTO -- The questions are simple and direct. The answers leave room for debate and conjecture.

To Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos: Do you consider yourself a right wing or a center?

"I'm a natural center, have played center my whole life, so if the question is where am I more comfortable, I'm more comfortable playing center," Stamkos told NHL.com during the NHL's Player Media Tour earlier this month. "But I think I proved last year I could play both and still be effective."

To Lightning coach Jon Cooper: Is Stamkos going to play center or right wing?

"Steven has clearly played more at center than on the wing in his career so obviously he's more comfortable at center," Cooper said. "However, he just proved in the playoffs that he can excel on the wing. It's a great weapon as a coach to have players that can play both center and wing."
