Five Questions: Trotz talks return to Nashville for ASG

Tuesday, 01.26.2016 / 3:00 AM / Five Questions With…

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

NHL.com's Q&A feature called "Five Questions With …" runs every Tuesday. We talk to key figures in the game and ask them questions to gain insight into their lives, careers and the latest news.

The latest edition features Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz:

Barry Trotz gets to do something this weekend that so few coaches ever get to do in their careers. His success is taking him home again, or at least to his adopted home, on the NHL's dime, and without any pressure to win.

Trotz called Nashville home for 17 years. He was the coach of the Nashville Predators, the only coach in franchise history until he parted ways with the organization following the 2013-14 season. He built a life, raised a family, met lifelong friends, and even helped pick the nickname Predators.

He found his place, his haven, his home. He and his wife have talked about retiring there one day in order to be close to their grandkids. This week he gets to go back because of how good he's been doing in his new home, in Washington with the Capitals.

Trotz will coach the Metropolitan Division All-Stars in the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game on Sunday because the Capitals are first in the division and the coach of the first place team gets to go to the All-Star Game.

Five Questions: Predators' Poile talks ASG, Johansen

NHL.com's Q&A feature called "Five Questions With …" runs every Tuesday. We talk to key figures in the game and ask them questions to gain insight into their lives, careers and the latest news.

The latest edition features Nashville Predators general manager David Poile:

Eighteen-and-a-half years in the town aptly known as "Music City USA" has turned Nashville Predators general manager David Poile into a country music fan.

"I have become one, absolutely," Poile said. "The fact that we've had so many stars actually come to our games, sing at our games between periods, do the national anthem, it's part of our fabric for sure."

Poile lists Vince Gill and Amy Grant as his favorites.

"For me, those are two of the best voices ever," he said.

Gill's inclusion in the upcoming NHL All-Star Weekend festivities in Nashville is yet another reason, among a plethora of them, that Poile is so excited to show his adopted city off to the hockey world.

Five Questions: Doan on Coyotes' surprising first half

NHL.com's Q&A feature called "Five Questions With …" runs every Tuesday. We talk to key figures in the game and ask them questions to gain insight into their lives, careers and the latest news.

The latest edition features Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan:

Though Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan has given some thought to his future beyond this season, the present is just too exciting and meaningful to be kept up at night thinking about what's next, about whether he wants to keep playing.

"I haven't made a decision one way or the other," said Doan, 39, who is in the final year of his contract. "This year is a long ways from being over."

Maybe longer than was originally expected.

Five Questions: Hynes getting a lot out of Devils

Tuesday, 01.05.2016 / 3:00 AM / Five Questions With…

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

NHL.com's Q&A feature called "Five Questions With …" runs every Tuesday. We talk to key figures in the game and ask them questions to gain insight into their lives, careers and the latest news.

The latest edition features New Jersey Devils coach John Hynes:

NEWARK, N.J. -- The key word that New Jersey Devils forward Bobby Farnham uses to describe first-year NHL coach John Hynes is preparation.

Farnham remembers being impressed with Hynes' ability to prepare and get the most out of his team when he played for him with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Nothing has changed since Farnham arrived in New Jersey on Oct. 26, after the Devils claimed him off waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Hynes, Farnham said, is the same coach in the NHL as he was in the AHL, and the reason why the Devils are exceeding expectations this season are the same reasons why Hynes won at least 40 games and reached the Calder Cup Playoffs in each of his five seasons in Wilkes-Barre.

Five Questions: Canadiens' Pacioretty on skid, Classic

NHL.com's Q&A feature called "Five Questions With …" runs every Tuesday. We talk to key figures in the game and ask them questions to gain insight into their lives, careers and the latest news.

The latest is a Winter Classic edition featuring Montreal Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty:

Max Pacioretty never expected his first season as captain of the Montreal Canadiens to be a smooth ride.

It's fair to assume he never expected it to be this turbulent, either.

In his first season as captain, Pacioretty has had to serve as a team spokesman on a variety of unpleasant issues, starting right in training camp when Zack Kassian was in a car accident, continuing when goaltender Carey Price was injured and then re-injured, to going through the worst stretch of losses in Pacioretty's career with the Canadiens.

Five Questions: Bruins' Vatrano on Winter Classic

NHL.com's Q&A feature called "Five Questions With …" runs every Tuesday. We talk to key figures in the game and ask them questions to gain insight into their lives, careers and the latest news.

The latest is a Winter Classic edition featuring Boston Bruins forward Frank Vatrano:

Rookie forward Frank Vatrano has already had two self-described "did that just really happen" moments since getting called up to the Boston Bruins in early November. A third might be coming Friday if everything stays status quo.

Vatrano, who grew up a Bruins fan living outside Springfield, Mass., in East Longmeadow, is expected to get the opportunity to live an experience he never could have dreamed of by playing for his favorite hockey team at Gillette Stadium, home of his favorite football team, in the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic against the Montreal Canadiens (1 p.m. ET; NBC, TVA Sports, SN).

"I'm really excited about it," Vatrano told NHL.com. "It's everyone's dream to play in the NHL, but to play in the Winter Classic is like a cherry on top."

Five Questions: Cooper likes Lightning's resiliency

NHL.com's Q&A feature called "Five Questions With …" runs every Tuesday. We talk to key figures in the game and ask them questions to gain insight into their lives, careers and the latest news.

This edition features Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper.

The Tampa Bay Lightning haven't had enough shields to block the darts of adversity that have punctured them this season.

Be it injuries, scoring problems, or dominating storylines about captain Steven Stamkos and his future in Tampa Bay, the Lightning have barely resembled the team that represented the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup Final last season.

The Lightning go into their game Tuesday against the Vancouver Canucks in sixth place in the Atlantic Division, two points out of the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference. But the Lightning also go into their game against the Canucks off a 5-2 win against the Ottawa Senators on Sunday, Tampa Bay's sixth win in nine December games and ninth in their past 14.

Five Questions: Flyers' Hakstol on transition to NHL

Tuesday, 12.15.2015 / 3:00 AM / Five Questions With…

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

NHL.com's Q&A feature called "Five Questions With …" runs every Tuesday. We talk to key figures in the game and ask them questions to gain insight into their lives, careers and the latest news.

The latest edition features Philadelphia Flyers coach Dave Hakstol:

Before this season, the last time Philadelphia Flyers coach Dave Hakstol attended an NHL game was June 11, 2014, Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final at Madison Square Garden. He was there with a colleague, in the stands, benefiting from knowing someone who gave him a free ticket, to watch the New York Rangers defeat the Los Angeles Kings for their only win of the series.

"Just went to watch the game," Hakstol told NHL.com.

That's exactly what Hakstol did at every NHL game he attended before this season.

The Flyers hired him from the University of North Dakota on May 18. Philadelphia general manager Ron Hextall gave Hakstol his first job in pro hockey. The first time he ever saw an NHL game from ice level was Sept. 21, when he coached his first preseason game.

Five Questions: Iginla optimistic Avalanche can win

Tuesday, 12.08.2015 / 3:00 AM / Five Questions With…

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

NHL.com's Q&A feature called "Five Questions With …" runs every Tuesday. We talk to key figures in the game and ask them questions to gain insight into their lives, careers and the latest news.

The latest edition features Colorado Avalanche right wing Jarome Iginla:

NEW YORK -- Colorado Avalanche right wing Jarome Iginla finds himself in the rarely enviable position as the oldest player on a team loaded with young talent trying to find its way through brutal bouts of inconsistency.

In a way, Iginla's 17-year tenure with the Calgary Flames ended in 2013 because they were a team looking to get younger so they could find their way too. But it came at a time when Iginla was a pending unrestricted free agent who could get traded to a contending team such as the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Iginla chose the Colorado Avalanche two summers ago by signing a three-year, $16 million contract because he had a strong belief in what coach Patrick Roy was building in Denver. He had reason for hope too, because the Avalanche were coming off a 112-point season and an agonizing seven-game series loss to the Minnesota Wild in the Western Conference First Round.

The Avalanche were supposed to be on the rise. Or at least that was the plan. What has happened instead has surprised and, ironically, energized Iginla.

Five Questions: Tortorella on Johansen, his image

Tuesday, 12.01.2015 / 3:00 AM / Five Questions With…

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

NHL.com's Q&A feature called "Five Questions With …" runs every Tuesday. We talk to key figures in the game and ask them questions to gain insight into their lives, careers and the latest news.

The latest edition features Columbus Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella:

He's been on the job almost six weeks, but Columbus Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella hasn't had much time to pick up his head and look around to take in his new surroundings.

Tortorella is so immersed in the job he took over on Oct. 21, after the Blue Jackets' 0-7-0 start, that his daily routine when at home is to make the short walk from his apartment to the rink so he can work for hours before going back home. That's it.

"I'm in this little apartment almost connected to the arena," he said. "We're diving in."

Tortorella's life in Columbus will change slightly next week, when his wife, Christine, arrives in town with the couple's four dogs. She is closing up their home in Stamford, Conn., to come live in Ohio for the rest of the season.

"Then we'll look to get out," Tortorella said.

Probably not too much, though. Tortorella feels he has enough work to do at the rink with the Blue Jackets to keep him occupied for more hours than there are in a day.
