Nashville Predators general manager David Poile's preference would have been to hit a home run this offseason. He's hoping a couple of singles and doubles are enough to get the team back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2011.

"We have some quantity that hopefully will provide us with more quality," Poile told NHL.com on Tuesday after announcing the club had signed centers Mike Ribeiro and Derek Roy to one-year contracts.

NEWARK, N.J. -- It was a surreal scene watching three talented prospects named "Brodeur" doing their best to make their father proud this week during New Jersey Devils development camp here at AmeriHealth Pavilion.

At a time when the future of franchise icon and unrestricted free agent goalie Martin Brodeur remains uncertain, there were his sons, Anthony, Jeremy and William Brodeur, on the ice looking to earn the respect of coaches and teammates just as their father did almost a quarter-century ago.

The sight of three Brodeur teens certainly was unusual for Devils coach Peter DeBoer.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Griffin Reinhart was 19 years old when he arrived at training camp with the New York Islanders last September, but he made a strong case to stay with them rather than be sent back to his junior team, the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League.

New York's first-round pick (No. 4) at the 2012 NHL Draft, the 6-foot-4, 217-pound defenseman impressed Islanders brass at training camp and scored a goal in a preseason game against the Calgary Flames. But instead of throwing him into the fire at the sport's highest level, it was determined Reinhart would be better served returning to the WHL.

In his final season of junior hockey, Reinhart learned what it takes to become a champion. The Oil Kings captain played 66 games in the regular season and playoffs, and combined for 34 points and a plus-31 rating, leading Edmonton to a Memorial Cup championship.

SCOTTSDALE Ariz. -- The Arizona Coyotes development camp featured 39 players and enough familiar NHL surnames to ice a starting lineup.

Henrik Samuelsson, son of Ulf Samuelsson and the Coyotes' first-round pick in 2012 (No. 27), is coming off a 95-point season with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League. Brendan Perlini, son of former Toronto Maple Leafs center Fred Perlini, was Arizona's first-round pick (No. 12) last month. Coyotes coaches Sean Burke and Jim Playfair got to put their sons, goalie Brendan Burke and forward Jackson Playfair, through their paces. And Kevin Ekman-Larsson, brother of Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, was one of the defensemen in camp.

But there is one player with the best chance to add another generation to his hockey pedigree very soon. The Coyotes are hoping forward Max Domi, son of longtime NHL forward Tie Domi, can supply some much-needed skill to the lineup.

Gorges took Gallagher in when the rookie forward arrived in the NHL at the start of the 2012-13 season.

"I don't know where I'm going to be next year," Gallagher told The Gazette in an interview published Monday. "I guess I have to move out on my own and start taking care of myself."

The 22-year-old is getting a head start, with a new condominium in his offseason home of Vancouver.

"I was always a small-ball player when I played baseball anyway, never much of a home-run guy," Parise told the Pioneer Press. "Contact, get on base, no strikeouts. It was fun."

NEWARK, N.J. -- Perhaps a silver lining in a season when the New Jersey Devils failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs was the impact defensemen Jon Merrill and Eric Gelinas had as rookies.

Each was given an opportunity because of injuries in the lineup, and many expect they will play big roles in 2014-15. The idea entering training camp in September is for Merrill, Gelinas and Adam Larsson to have an opportunity to earn a full-time job among the top six.

The loss of defensemen Anton Volchenkov (buyout) and Mark Fayne (Edmonton Oilers) this offseason may have opened the door for another young defenseman to join the mix or at least serve as an injury replacement. Among them at Devils development camp this week at AmeriHealth Pavilion are Seth Helgeson (No. 114 pick in the 2009 NHL Draft) and Damon Severson (No. 60, 2012).

General manager Lou Lamoriello and coach Peter DeBoer may also use rookie camp and training camp to target a few young forwards capable of providing some energy, enthusiasm and production on a regular basis. Two possible candidates are Reid Boucher and Stefan Matteau.

STONE HARBOR, N.J. -- On a beautiful 90-degree summer day, even the most devoted hockey prospects would like to take a day off and hit the beach.

Philadelphia Flyers trainer Jim McCrossin knows that as well as anyone, and that's why he's one of the hosts of the annual Trial on the Isle, a day of hard work and fun that comes near the end of a long week of development camp for Flyers hopefuls.

The 29 players at the camp got their work in, but it was on the beach and in the water rather than on the ice.

"It was definitely nice to get out here away from the rink this week," defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere said. "Nice to be with the fans and all the support we have. We had the trial on the isle, the obstacle course. We went to the bay and we did a little paddleboarding and kayaking, relay races. Now we're doing autographs for kids."

STONE HARBOR, N.J. -- Travis Sanheim had just emerged from a tug of war on a paddleboard and a kayak race on the waters of the back bays in this New Jersey beach town. They followed a long morning of running on the beach and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean.

However, it would have taken a serious storm to blow the smile off his face.

The Philadelphia Flyers' 2014 first-round pick (No. 17) knows he is now light years away from where he was a year ago.

"I was playing midget hockey [last year], sitting on the couch watching the [NHL] draft," Sanheim said. "Just dreaming and hoping I could walk up on that stage, and for it to be a year later is pretty crazy."

NASHVILLE -- For all of the Nashville Predators fans concerned about the development of Filip Forsberg, it's worth keeping in mind that he's 19 years old.

Perhaps because the Predators have struggled for offense in recent seasons and because Forsberg was drafted high in the first round and was acquired in a trade with the Washington Capitals for Martin Erat, a player who averaged 53 points for the Predators for seven consecutive seasons, the weight of heavy expectations has fallen upon Forsberg.

He has plenty of time to live up to them, but as with all players he needs to be given time to develop.

"Obviously it's a long journey," Forsberg said during Predators development camp. "I'm still a pretty young kid so hopefully … my time is coming this year."
