Capitals defense prospect Carrick has bright future

Friday, 10.17.2014 / 1:14 PM / AHL Update

While Connor Carrick was waiting to hear his name called at the 2012 NHL Draft, his younger brother, Hunter, was sitting beside him, listening to hundreds of names he didn't recognize.

Joining in with the spirited crowd in Pittsburgh, Hunter began playfully booing each team that was called, eliciting a warning from his older brother that he'd better not boo when a team took him.

Five rounds later, Carrick was shaking hands with George McPhee, then the general manager of the Washington Capitals, and letting his new team in on a secret.

"I ratted my brother out," Carrick said. "I let them know, 'Hey, this kid was booing your staff.' He was as red as a goal light."

Defending AHL champ Texas Stars a model of stability

Friday, 10.10.2014 / 12:58 PM / AHL Update

Perhaps the only guarantee in the world of sports is there are no guarantees. Players get injured, coaches get fired, and general managers trade away the past in order to make the future better.

In the American Hockey League, the stability of it all is often so precarious that many teams are unable to get out from under it. For the Texas Stars, a season removed from winning the franchise's first Calder Cup, stability is something they have in spades.

Of the 28 names recently engraved on the Cup, 18 are returning to Cedar Park for the start of the 2014-15 season, which begins Friday. This core knows not only how to win, but how to win together, a luxury not many other teams can tap into.

"It was a great experience for everyone last year, and it gives everyone that much more confidence and that much more experience getting to go on a big run like that," said second-year pro Curtis McKenzie. "Now everyone knows we can be champions."

The Texas Stars won the Calder Cup for the first time in their five-year history when Patrik Nemeth scored 14:30 into overtime for a 4-3 victory against the St. John's IceCaps on Tuesday in Game 5 of the American Hockey League's championship series.

Nemeth, a second-round pick (No. 41) by the parent Dallas Stars in the 2010 NHL Draft, deked his way into the slot before firing a high wrist shot past IceCaps goaltender Michael Hutchinson for his first goal of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

The Stars, the AHL's top team during the regular season, won the final three games of the series on the road in overtime. Regular-season MVP and scoring champion Travis Morin captured the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the playoffs after finishing with a league-best 22 points in 21 playoff games. Morin led all scorers with seven points in the Calder Cup Finals, including three game-winning goals.

Texas leads 3-1 in the best-of-7 series and can win the American Hockey League's championship for the first time with a victory in Game 5 on Tuesday in St. John's (6 p.m. ET).

During the 2013-14 season, 19-year-old Josh Morrissey's storied journey on the ice has taken him from Winnipeg Jets training camp to a Western Hockey League campaign in Prince Albert, the World Junior Championship in Sweden, and now the American Hockey League's Calder Cup Finals with the St. John's IceCaps.

"Quite honestly, it's all happened so fast that it hasn't really sunk in yet," said Morrissey, who made his professional debut with the IceCaps, Winnipeg's top development affiliate, at the end of the regular season after the Raiders were eliminated from the WHL playoffs. "Along the way in your career, you don't have that many chances to win championships at any level, so I'm trying to take it all in, enjoy every day and do whatever I can to try and win."

Goaltender Michael Hutchinson made 49 saves Monday to lead the St. John's IceCaps to a series-tying 2-1 victory against the Texas Stars in Game 2 of the Calder Cup Finals in Cedar Park, Texas.

Hutchinson rebounded from a poor performance in Game 1 of the American Hockey League championship series one night earlier, when he allowed five goals on 22 shots. He was flawless after Blair Riley put the IceCaps ahead to stay by beating Cristopher Nilstorp 1:13 into the second period, 44 seconds after the Stars' Brendan Ranford had tied the game.

The IceCaps, the top affiliate of the Winnipeg Jets, host Game 3 of the best-of-7 series Wednesday.

Game 2 is set for Monday in Texas (8:30 p.m. ET; NHLN-US), the American Hockey League affiliate of the Dallas Stars.

After O'Neill's goal tied the game 1:47 into the second period, Mueller gave Texas a 2-1 lead 2:05 later, when he took a pass from Dustin Jeffrey (three assists) and fired a wrister from the right circle past Hutchinson for his sixth goal of the playoffs.

A postseason that began with the 16 most prolific teams in the American Hockey League has been narrowed down to two, as the Texas Stars and St. John's IceCaps will play for the league's highest honor in the 2014 Calder Cup Finals beginning Sunday at 8:30 p.m. ET at Cedar Park Center in Cedar Park, Texas.

The regular-season champion Stars, the AHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars, ousted the Toronto Marlies (Toronto Maple Leafs) in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals, while the Winnipeg Jets' affiliate in St. John's took down the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh Penguins) in six games to win the Eastern Conference crown.

This series will be the first-ever between the Stars and IceCaps. Texas had an impressive 106 points during the regular season to earn the AHL's Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy and the No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs. St. John's had the third-highest point total in the Eastern Conference with 99.
