When the Vancouver Canucks traded Cory Schneider and then Roberto Luongo in recent seasons, there were questions about who their current goalie, let alone goalie of the future, would be. Eddie Lack appeared to have the job lined up but then he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes at the 2015 NHL Draft.

That left the job to Ryan Miller, in his second season with the Canucks. Miller missed time last season with a knee injury and was 29-15-1 with six shutouts, a 2.53 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage in 45 games. This season, he's started 17 of 20 games, but only has five wins (5-7-5). His save percentage is identical to a season ago, and his goals-against average is very close (2.51).

Miller is owned in 89 percent of Yahoo leagues, mainly because he's a No. 1 goalie, but for how long will that last? Vancouver opted to keep backup Jacob Markstrom over Lack. Markstrom was injured in preseason and has allowed seven goals (three at even strength) in two games this season (1-0-1) but will definitely see more action.

If fantasy owners could believe in anything from season to season it was getting solid production from a number of Pittsburgh Penguins, and 2015-16 was supposed to be even better.

General manager Jim Rutherford acquired Phil Kessel from the Toronto Maple Leafs and all of the so-called-experts, including this one, predicted otherworldly production for Kessel, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang.

The Colorado Avalanche are at the bottom of the Central Division, the toughest in the NHL, and don't exactly have the deepest, most complete roster to fall back on in their quest to get return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Luckily they do have Nathan MacKinnon, a top-15 fantasy forward in Yahoo leagues this season, who continues to prove his sophomore slump was a fluke. He has at least a point in 11 of his 17 games this season with five multipoint outings (T-9th in NHL) and 19 points on the season (seventh in NHL). His shooting percentage woes are no more after an unlucky and underachieving 2014-15 season of 14 goals on 192 shots on goal in 64 games (7.3 percent) prior to his season-ending injury.

This season, MacKinnon ranks tied for 14th or better in goals (eight on 61 SOG; 13.1 percent), points, plus-minus and SOG. But the crafty playmaker has also done his part to revitalize the Avalanche's other franchise cornerstone, Matt Duchene.

The Tampa Bay Lightning enter the week 22nd in the NHL in goals per game (2.42).

As improbable as it is that they're in the bottom-third in the League in scoring in mid-November, it's just as unlikely they'll be outside the top 10 at the end of the season. There's too much talent on that roster.

Nicklas Lidstrom entered the NHL Hall of Fame on Monday night and it got this fantasy writer, who specializes in the coverage of defensemen, feeling nostalgic. In 2013-14, Mats Zuccarello led the New York Rangers in regular-season scoring with 59 points as mostly a third-line player. Last season, the Tampa Bay Lightning had 10 different forwards score 10-plus goals. The common theme: Each of those teams made the Stanley Cup Final.

It's becoming more and more routine to see such production from depth forwards on contending teams. Secondary scoring isn't always enough to muster a successful regular season and deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Tertiary scoring is an important element in the modern-day NHL.

Through 13-16 games for each team this season, we've seen significant offensive contributions from third-liners around the League. While staying power is always a concern when considering depth scorers for your roster, here are some notable performers who have excelled in roles not usually conducive to fantasy relevance.

The rookie crop this season has been as good as advertised. Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers, the first pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, had 12 points in 13 games before sustaining a shoulder injury which will keep him out of action for a few months. Jack Eichel of the Buffalo Sabres, the No. 2 pick, has five goals. Max Domi of the Arizona Coyotes has 12 points, as does Artemi Panarin of the Chicago Blackhawks.

But here's a player no one's been talking about although he's second in points among rookie defensemen: Colin Miller of the Boston Bruins.

Fantasy hockey is all about numbers and statistics. Whether it's the generic goals, assists and points or the new advanced metrics, statistics are the bread and butter.

So in the latest edition of Fantasy Friday, I'm going to look at 10 of the most interesting or strange statistics in the NHL right now and how they relate to fantasy hockey.

1. Philadelphia Flyers forward Jakub Voracek has 50 shots on goal (SOG) and no goals to show for it. That's the most shots of any player without a goal this season. Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown is second, with 48 shots and no goals. Voracek, who has had three straight 20-goal seasons and had 81 points last season, continues to play alongside Claude Giroux and it's only a matter of time before he starts scoring again. Now is probably your last chance to buy low on him. Brown, owned in 12 percent of Yahoo leagues, has been playing mostly with Anze Kopitar of late, but he hasn't been a useful fantasy player for the past two seasons (unless you're in a hits league). I would leave Brown on waivers.
