With Ondrej Pavelec (52 percent owned in Yahoo Leagues) expected to be sidelined for at least the month of December with a knee sprain, Michael Hutchinson has been given first crack at taking over as the Winnipeg Jets' No. 1 goalie. But Hutchinson (27 percent owned) has lost each of his past three games, allowing three or more goals in each. Overall, he's 5-6-1 with a 3.09 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage and has lost his past six starts.

A year ago at this time the Calgary Flames were the talk of the NHL. They were on their way to making the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2008-09 and doing it with a young, explosive team that caught opponents off guard on a nightly basis.

The attack was led by one of the best collections of offensive defensemen in the League and that was as much a boon for fantasy owners as it was for Flames management.

Mark Giordano turned in a career season that saw him average .79 points per game as he rolled up 11 goals and 48 points in 61 games. When he was knocked out of the lineup with an injury, Dennis Wideman stepped up.

The Dallas Stars and Washington Capitals have two of the NHL's most potent power plays. Not many people will be surprised to hear that, with forwards like Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, Jason Spezza, Patrick Sharp, Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom swarming the offensive zone for those teams.

But neither the Stars nor the Capitals own the League's best power-play conversion percentage. Through one quarter of the season, that distinction belongs to the Boston Bruins.

Led by Patrice Bergeron (13 power-play points, 1st) and David Krejci (nine, T-9th), the Bruins have transformed an ordinary man-advantage unit (17.8 in 2014-15, 17th) into a League-leading juggernaut. Boston has converted on 32.4 of its power-play chances, more than five percent better than the next-best team (Dallas, 27.0).

No American-born NHL player has had a point streak as long as the 19-game run Patrick Kane will bring into the Chicago Blackhawks' game against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.

He set the record Saturday with a first-period goal against the Los Angeles Kings, passing Eddie Olczyk (Toronto Maple Leafs, 1989-90) and Phil Kessel (Boston Bruins, 2008-09), who each had an 18-game streak. Kane also had an assist in the second period.

Kane has 11 goals and 20 assists during his streak, which began Oct. 17, and he is the runaway most valuable player of fantasy hockey so far.

Although the players included in this week’s Waiver-Wire Watch likely won't produce at Kane's level, each has been on an impressive recent run and is worth considering as a fill-in for an injured or slumping player.

Now that Thanksgiving has ended here in the United States, it's time for everyone to prepare for the holiday shopping spree that is Black Friday. And what better way to tie this crazy day into fantasy hockey than to give you a list of some of the best fantasy bargains.

I'll start by looking at three players (a forward, defenseman and goalie) that have provided the best bang for their buck to this point in the 2015-16 season, and then I'll give you three players (all available in at least 70 percent of Yahoo fantasy leagues) that can be potential bargains for the remainder of this season.

Chicago Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford has won the Stanley Cup twice and won 30 games in each of the past four full NHL seasons, and he's gotten those wins despite not playing in more than 59 games. That means you can expect his backup, Scott Darling, to get between 20-25 starts.

Crawford's numbers aren't up to his standards; his 2.57 goals-against average and .912 save percentage are less than his career averages of 2.35 and .916, respectively. He made 27 saves in a 5-2 win against the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday, but Darling has started two of the past five games and likely will start once this weekend with Chicago having back-to-back games at the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings.

As Darling showed last season, he's more than capable of coming up big when it matters. Darling was 3-1-0 with a 2.21 GAA and a .936 save percentage in helping the Chicago Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup last season. This was after he went 9-4-0 with a 1.99 GAA and a .936 save percentage in 14 starts during the regular season.

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated in Canada and the United States as a day of being grateful for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. We in the United States will celebrate this holiday on Thursday, but today the NHL's defensemen join me as we come together for our third annual defensive fantasy feast.

You are all probably used to attending gatherings that feature things like turkey, potatoes and roasted vegetables, as well as plenty of scrumptious desserts. Sadly, you'll have to wait until tomorrow for all of that, but the defensemen and I have tons of goals, assists and shots on goal, as well as secondary delights such as blocked shots and hits, to fill whet your fantasy palette!

The main course in this feast always comes in the form of goals, and since even the most lethal offensive defensemen tend to top out around 20, they are very valuable. This year Brent Burns (San Jose Sharks) and Justin Faulk (Carolina Hurricanes) were nice enough to arrive at our feast with eight goals apiece. Dustin Byfuglien (Winnipeg Jets) and Shea Weber (Nashville Predators) brought six each, and Erik Karlsson (Ottawa Senators) and Colton Parayko (St. Louis Blues) brought us five.

We've reached the one-quarter mark of the 2015-16 NHL season, and plenty of big names have fallen short of expectations from a fantasy standpoint. But, thankfully, there's still a ton of time for those players to turn things around, presenting opportunities for buy-low trades to capitalize on impatient fantasy owners in your league.

Two seasons ago, Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Flyers became the prime example of why you shouldn't give up on an underperforming player in November. Giroux had no goals and seven assists in his first 15 games that season but ended up with 28 goals and 86 points (third in NHL) in 82 games. Patience paid off for some, but many who drafted him cut the cord way too early and ended up kicking themselves in hindsight.

Some of you are thankful for taking Alex Ovechkin, not Sidney Crosby, with the No. 1 pick of your league's draft.

Many of you are thankful you had the foresight to draft the Dallas Stars' John Klingberg, whose 19 assists are tied for first in the NHL and 23 points are tied for fifth in the League after he was selected on average after 30 other defensemen in Yahoo leagues, or Chicago Blackhawks rookie forward Artemi Panarin (Yahoo average draft position: 154.7), who has seven goals, 14 assists and 51 shots on goal in 21 games.

The Los Angeles Kings finished the 2013-14 season with 100 points, sixth most in the Western Conference. Center Anze Kopitar led the team with 29 goals, 41 assists, 70 points and a plus-34 rating during the regular season. He recorded another 26 points in 26 playoff games en route to the team's second Stanley Cup in three years.

The 29 goals and 70 points weren't career-highs for Kopitar, but he finished the season as the 15th ranked fantasy player in Yahoo leagues because of his well-balanced statistical coverage across the board.

Last season, Kopitar struggled out of the gate. He had just three points in his first 11 games and 12 in his first 25 games overall. Kopitar, a likely top-20 overall fantasy pick heading into this season, had been on pace for under 40 points over a full season at that time.
