Matthews navigating Swiss life with assist from mom

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com Staff Writer

When Auston Matthews' mother isn't making arrangements to watch her son play in some sold-out hockey arena in Switzerland, she's either helping him with schoolwork or providing a home-cooked meal.

"I cook every day; typically breakfast and dinner," Ema Matthews told NHL.com. "I don't have to make lunch that much as Auston will go out with teammates after practice.

"Every now and again we'll go out to eat, but mostly I'm cooking to make sure he gets the nutrition he needs."

Top prospect Matthews already 'class of the league'

Tim Wharnsby - NHL.com Correspondent

Until last week, 18-year-old Auston Matthews' first season of professional hockey with Zurich in National League A, Switzerland's top professional league, was ticking along as efficiently as one of the country's finest timepieces.

But Matthews' smooth season hit a bump in the road during a game Oct. 23 when he fell and crashed into the boards, sustaining a back injury.

He finished that game and played in the next two. But the Zurich medical staff decided it was best to hold Matthews out of a game last Friday, especially since the league now is on a two-week break.

While the injury will prevent Matthews from playing for the United States at the Deutschland Cup, which will be held Nov. 6-8 in Augsburg, Germany, Matthews hopes to be ready when Zurich resumes its schedule Nov. 12.

Team OHL will play Team Russia on Nov. 12 in Owen Sound, Ontario, and Nov. 16 in Windsor, Ontario. The games are used by Hockey Canada as an evaluation tool for picking the team that will play for Canada at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Chychrun, who received an A rating from NHL Central Scouting in its September players to watch list, is expected to be one of the top three players picked at the 2016 draft.

Kale Clague, a top prospect for the 2016 NHL Draft, was among the 20 players invited to play for Team WHL against Team Russia in the 2015 CHL Canada-Russia Series.

Team WHL will play Team Russia in the first two games of the series, Nov. 9 in Kelowna, British Columbia, and Nov. 10 in Kamloops, British Columbia. The games are used by Hockey Canada as an evaluation tool for picking the team that will play for Canada at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Clague, a 5-foot-11, 177-pound left-shot defender who plays for the Brandon Wheat Kings, earned an A rating from NHL Central Scouting in its September players to watch list. In nine games this season he has five assists and a plus-8 rating. He had four goals and nine assists in 20 games last season. He also had one goal in four games to help Canada win the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup in August.

Julien Gauthier and Pierre-Luc Dubois, two top prospects for the 2016 NHL Draft, were among the 23 players picked for Team QMJHL in the 2015 CHL Canada-Russia Series.

Team QMJHL will play Team Russia in the final two games of the series, Nov. 17 in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, and Nov. 19 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The games are used by Hockey Canada as an evaluation tool for picking the team that will play for Canada at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Gauthier, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound right wing, has seven goals in 10 games for Val-d'Or and he earned an A rating from NHL Central Scouting in its September players to watch list. Last season he had 38 goals and 73 points in 68 games, and 10 points in 17 QMJHL playoff games.

Matthews' smooth transition earns him top rating

Tuesday, 09.29.2015 / 9:30 AM / 2016 NHL Draft

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com Staff Writer

It hasn't taken Auston Matthews very long to become an international success.

Matthews, a 6-foot-1, 194-pound center who many project will be the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, made headlines in August after announcing he would join ZSC in Switzerland's top professional league this season instead of playing NCAA hockey or in the Canadian Hockey League.

The decision by Matthews was made with the help of his parents and player agents Pat Brisson and Judd Moldaver of CAA Sports.

Chychrun among Central Scouting's A-rated players

Tuesday, 09.29.2015 / 9:30 AM / 2016 NHL Draft

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com Staff Writer

Sarnia Sting defenseman Jakob Chychrun, a projected first-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, appears ready to make up for lost time.

Chychrun, who had 16 goals and 17 assists in 42 games last season as a rookie in the Ontario Hockey League, missed 26 regular-season games and five OHL playoff games because of an upper-body injury. Despite the absence, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound left-shot defender was a nominee for OHL rookie of the year and defenseman of the year.

"There's lots of expectations just because of how he's performed more than anything else, but it's compounded a little bit because we haven't been able to see as much of him than we would have liked," NHL Central Scouting's David Gregory said. "There's a lot of anticipation leading into his OHL season."
