The Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday acquired defenseman Andrej Sekera from the Carolina Hurricanes in a trade for a first-round draft pick and a prospect.

Sekera, 28, has 19 points in 57 games this season and was second on the Hurricanes in average ice time at 22:46. Last season he set career highs with 11 goals and 44 points.

The Kings are playing without two defensemen, injured Alec Martinez (concussion symptoms) and suspended Slava Voynov.

"I think it's the one area of the team that we felt was the one area that could be targeted in terms of an upgrade," Los Angeles general manager Dean Lombardi said, according to LA Kings Insider. "… I think the thing about [Sekera], No. 1, he's a competitive guy. We have no issues as far as him fitting in here with this group. No question he’s going to be hungry. I think whenever you look at your back end, it's a mix-type thing, and I think [there are] things he can bring to us. … He's very mobile, and even though he's not big (6 feet, 201 pounds), he certainly competes. He's a smart player."

Jets acquire forward Tlusty, place Wheeler on IR

WINNIPEG -- The Winnipeg Jets' bid to reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2007 received another boost Wednesday.

The Jets acquired 26-year-old left wing Jiri Tlusty from the Carolina Hurricanes for a third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft and a conditional 2015 sixth-round pick. That pick would become a fifth-round choice in 2015 if the Jets reach the playoffs this season.

Tlusty has 13 goals and 10 assists in 52 games this season. Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said he expects he'll be available when the Jets host the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.

It's the second trade in two weeks for Cheveldayoff. He acquired defenseman Tyler Myers and right wing Drew Stafford, a 2015 first-round pick, and two prospects from the Buffalo Sabres on Feb. 11 for left wing Evander Kane and defenseman Zach Bogosian.

Winnipeg holds the first wild card in the Western Conference and has a four-point lead on the second wild card, the Minnesota Wild. Winnipeg is trying to fend off Minnesota, the Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks, each one point behind the Wild. The Jets are within four points of the Chicago Blackhawks for third place in the Central Division. Eight of the Jets' final 20 games are against division opponents, and they have five games remaining against Pacific Division teams.

"The [dressing] room has been sending me the message," Cheveldayoff said Wednesday. "[The trade] is a message to the room that we're all-in here. We're going to keep working [until the NHL Trade Deadline on March 2 at 3 p.m. ET]."

Penguins acquire Winnik from Maple Leafs for Sill

WASHINGTON -- The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired forward Daniel Winnik from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday in a trade for forward Zach Sill, a fourth-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft and second-round pick in the 2016 draft.

"He's a guy that will fit in our top nine," Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said of Winnik. "He gives us more balance and more depth up front, something we were looking for. He's had a very good year, one of the best in his career, and he’s a top penalty-killer in this League."

Pittsburgh plays the Washington Capitals at Verizon Center on Wednesday.

Winnik, 29, had seven goals, 25 points and a plus-15 rating in 58 games with the Maple Leafs. He averaged 3:27 of shorthanded ice time per game with Toronto, which led the Maple Leafs.

"Wherever they want me to play, I'll play," Winnik told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "If they want right wing, left wing, center, I can play all three positions."

Too soon to judge unique Canadiens, Ducks trade

Wednesday, 02.25.2015 / 11:18 AM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Arpon Basu - Managing Editor LNH.com

It's hard not to rush to judgment.

When two teams make a trade, a winner and a loser must be determined before the players involved have even arrived with their new teams.

By the time they actually take the ice, opinions have been cast and the groundwork for prejudice has been laid. The trade always will be viewed through the lens of that original analysis, no matter how much circumstances change.

Except trades like the one the Montreal Canadiens and Anaheim Ducks completed Monday are so rare in the NHL today that judgment on it must be reserved, even though that rarity also is the reason why it is so tempting to attempt to determine a winner immediately.

Wild acquire Bergenheim in trade with Panthers

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Wild acquired Sean Bergenheim in a trade with the Florida Panthers on Tuesday, giving up a third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft for the veteran forward. The Wild also receive the Panthers' seventh-round pick in the 2016 draft.

Bergenheim is in the final year of a four-year, $11 million contract and has eight goals and 10 assists in 39 games this season. He's played in 489 NHL games with the Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Islanders.

Bergenheim, 31, was a first-round pick (No. 22) of the Islanders in the 2002 NHL Draft.

"We were looking for some depth," Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher said. "We're playing with 12 guys up front right now that are playing well, but you get one or two more injuries and you start to really get into some issues. The emphasis for us was to find a proven guy with some playoff experience that's wiling to compete, go to the net, pursue pucks, and Sean brings all those attributes."

Canadiens trade Sekac to Ducks for Smith-Pelly

Tuesday, 02.24.2015 / 4:32 PM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

NHL.com

The Montreal Canadiens beefed up their forward group Tuesday by trading some speed and skill to the Anaheim Ducks.

The Canadiens traded rookie forward Jiri Sekac to the Ducks for forward Devante Smith-Pelly.

Sekac and Smith-Pelly are each 22 and were born four days apart in June 1992.

"I see Jiri more as a player who is quick; a bit less speed, but more quick," Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin told reporters in St. Louis on Tuesday, where the Canadiens were preparing to face the St. Louis Blues. "Those are the terms we use. From [point] A to [point] B he's really fast, but over a long distance he's not the fastest player. He's really good down low and in the corners. But in that sense I don't think we lose anything with Devante, who is not as fast. He's a big guy. He's not a speed demon, but he'll go into the tough areas and for us that was something we found attractive."

Sekac has seven goals and 16 points in 50 games. He took part in the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition last month.

"[Sekac] has good upside offensively. He can skate, he can shoot. He's one of those late bloomers," Ducks GM Bob Murray said.

Flames GM Treliving approaches deadline with caution

Monday, 02.23.2015 / 9:08 AM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Aaron Vickers - NHL.com Correspondent

CALGARY -- The Calgary Flames have put first-year general manager Brad Treliving in a bit of a jam.

In just the second season of a full-on rebuild, the upstart Flames are pushing for a Stanley Cup Playoffs spot in the Western Conference, limiting the GM from declaring his team as full-on buyers or sellers at the NHL Trade Deadline on March 2.

"We're making up new terminology," Treliving told NHL.com. "We're in a stage here where the play of our team has put us in a position that you'd like to help. You'd like to be able to help for our stretch drive. Having said that, you also want to be careful and cautious of the type of … whether it be young players, young prospects, draft picks … that you expose in a situation like this. We're like everybody else. We're listening."

Top 15 targets for the 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Monday, 02.23.2015 / 3:00 AM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

The 2015 NHL Trade Deadline is next Monday, March 2, at 3 p.m. ET, so expect the rumor mill to churn in overdrive this week as general managers work the phones to try to make one last ditch effort to improve their teams heading down the stretch in the regular season.

Although there have already been two significant trades involving key players such as defensemen Cody Franson, Tyler Myers and Zach Bogosian as well as forwards Evander Kane, Mike Santorelli and Drew Stafford, there are still plenty of teams that need some help and players that could be on the move.

Devils' Jagr remains valuable commodity at age 43

Tuesday, 02.17.2015 / 3:00 AM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey Devils right wing Jaromir Jagr continues to be defiant against Father Time, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the now 43-year-old could be one of the most influential players to change teams prior to the 2015 NHL Trade Deadline on March 2 at 3 p.m. ET.

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello hasn't said he is going to trade Jagr, nor has Jagr made public any request to be traded, but New Jersey's position in the standings (seventh in the Metropolitan Division) and Jagr's position as a player on a one-year contract who can still score makes him a valuable commodity as the deadline nears.

"He's got it, he's still got it," Devils forward Dainius Zubrus said. "He's still doing it."

Senators could stand pat after Methot extension

Monday, 02.16.2015 / 4:21 PM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Chris Stevenson - NHL.com Correspondent

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators didn't look like they would be in a position to be active when it came to the NHL Trade Deadline on March 2.

A long shot to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Senators could have been a seller at the deadline, but now another of their few potential chips has been taken off the table.

The Senators signed defenseman Marc Methot to a four-year contract extension Monday which will pay the 29-year-old $4.9 million a season.

Senators general manager Bryan Murray had said if Methot, potentially an unrestricted free July 1, had not been signed by March 2 he would be traded.

Murray didn't want to run the risk of losing him for nothing.
