Goalie matchup Game 4: Rangers keep plate clean

Thursday, 06.12.2014 / 6:42 PM / Kings vs Rangers - 2014 Stanley Cup Final

Kevin Woodley - NHL.com Correspondent

A huge part of the 2014 Stanley Cup Final will be the battle between 2012 Cup winner Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings and Vezina Trophy winner Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers. Those two elite goalies will go a long way in determining which team will raise the Stanley Cup later this month.

Who has the upper hand? NHL.com scouted the goalies before the series and will track their performance during each game, identifying trends affecting each goaltender. NHL.com correspondent Kevin Woodley, managing editor of InGoal Magazine, will use the 360 Save Review System software from Double Blue Sports Analytics to chart the goals and shots against each goalie in each game of the Stanley Cup Final. Here are his findings from Game 4, a 2-1 victory by the Rangers. The Kings lead the best-of-7 series 3-1.

Rangers get some puck luck in Game 4

NEW YORK -- On a night when the New York Rangers probably had no business winning, the term "game of inches" was given new meaning at Madison Square Garden when the home team got a little puck luck.

"It was a real tough game I think for [Los Angeles]," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "It was probably their best game of the playoffs that they've played against us."

That may be, but the Rangers received some fortuitous bounces, goal-line stops and timely deflections on the way to a 2-1 victory against the Los Angeles Kings in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, giving them some life in this series.

Rangers live to fight another day thanks to Lundqvist

NEW YORK -- For the first time in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final, the Los Angeles Kings dominated the New York Rangers, and for the first time in the series, they did not win.

Before the Final began, Game 4 might have followed the blueprint some people envisioned for how the underdog Rangers could find success against the Kings, with goaltender Henrik Lundqvist providing the difference the other skaters could not produce.

The Kings pushed and pushed Wednesday at Madison Square Garden, controlling the puck and forcing the Rangers into some desperate defending. New York did just enough, and The King put in a star performance to keep the Rangers alive with a 2-1 victory. The Kings lead the best-of-7 series 3-1. Game 5 is Friday in Los Angeles (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, RDS).

"I wouldn't say that's our best game of the series, but we found a way," Rangers forward Carl Hagelin said. "Our goal was to win the game [Wednesday] night, and we did."

Rangers survive Kings' barrage to extend Final

NEW YORK -- Don't bother telling the New York Rangers that the 2014 Stanley Cup Final is finished.

Despite being outshot 41-19 in Game 4 at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers earned a 2-1 home win Wednesday to cut the Los Angeles Kings' lead in the best-of-7 series to 3-1. As they head back to Los Angeles for Game 5 at Staples Center on Friday (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, RDS), they now believe that they can seize control of this series.

The Rangers seemed outgunned for large stretches Wednesday, but they weren't overly concerned with how they earned their first win of the Final, just that they got it. With Game 5 on the horizon, the reminders are everywhere of what is possible if a team believes and competes hard enough.

Kings fans have to wait at least 1 more game for Cup

LOS ANGELES -- Tracey Kenney and Merry Cheers took a selfie standing in front of a barren plaza at L.A. Live, across from Staples Center. They were among hundreds of disappointed Kings fans pouring out of bars and restaurants at the sports and entertainment district Wednesday night.

"We just took a picture of ourselves with this emptiness in the back, showing how we feel in our heart," Cheers said. "An empty party zone reflects the emptiness in our hearts. This is a total 180 [degree turn] of how we were going to be right now. But we're rooting for it.

"We have hope knowing that they're going to bring it back home."

NEW YORK -- Henrik Lundqvist was playing the part of miracle worker, but he needed help as the seconds ticked away in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final and the New York Rangers tried to hold onto a one-goal lead at a very tense Madison Square Garden.

Enter center Derek Stepan, who made the save of the night to preserve a 2-1 victory against the Los Angeles Kings that sent the series back to Staples Center for Game 5 on Friday (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, RDS).

Rangers win 8th straight elimination game at MSG

New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist kept his team from being swept out of the Stanley Cup Final by making 40 saves in a 2-1 victory against the Los Angeles Kings in Game 4 on Wednesday. He also extended his own brilliance in elimination games.

Lundqvist is 5-0 this season in win-or-go-home games. He and the Rangers beat the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference First Round, then won Games 5, 6 and 7 against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round before beating the Kings.

Ramsay: Execution main culprit in Rangers' losses

Tuesday, 06.10.2014 / 5:15 PM / Kings vs Rangers - 2014 Stanley Cup Final

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

For additional insight into the Stanley Cup Final between the Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers, NHL.com has enlisted the help of Craig Ramsay to break down the action. Ramsay will be checking in throughout the series.

Tuesday, Ramsay was hired by the Edmonton Oilers to be an assistant coach. He played in more than 1,000 NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres before going on to coach the Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers and Atlanta Thrashers. In the 2000 Stanley Cup Playoffs, he led the Flyers to the seventh game of the Eastern Conference Final.

NEW YORK -- Craig Ramsay isn't surprised to hear the New York Rangers talking about puck luck and bad bounces now that they're trailing 3-0 in the Stanley Cup Final.

"They're searching," Ramsay told NHL.com. "There's no doubt."

Kings want to finish Rangers as quickly as possible

Brian Compton - NHL.com Deputy Managing Editor

NEW YORK -- The Los Angeles Kings know what it's like to trail 3-0 in a best-of-7 series. That's why they have no intention of taking their foot off the gas in the Stanley Cup Final.

In the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Kings became the fourth team in NHL history to win a series after losing the first three games when they rallied to eliminate the San Jose Sharks. Wednesday they'll attempt to complete a sweep of the New York Rangers in Game 4 at Madison Square Garden (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, RDS).

"It wasn't easy for us to come back from 3-0 in the first series against San Jose," Kings defenseman Drew Doughty said Tuesday. "We know how it can happen. All it takes is one game, one momentum shift. The [other] team can run with it, the other team can be down in the dumps.

"That's why this next game is so important for us. We can't let them back into the series. We have to take it to them. They're going to have their best effort without a doubt and we need to have ours as well."

Five things Rangers must do to avoid being swept

Tuesday, 06.10.2014 / 4:28 PM / Kings vs Rangers - 2014 Stanley Cup Final

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

NEW YORK -- The looks on their faces told the story of one end of this Stanley Cup Final. They were looks of disbelief, of disgust, of dismay. And they were looks that shouldn't have surprised anyone who made their way into the New York Rangers dressing room Tuesday afternoon.

"I'm not going to lie to you, it's pretty much impossible to be upbeat," Rangers center Brad Richards said. "But you have to be professional. The series is not over."

Not yet anyway. Maybe soon, though.

The Los Angeles Kings lead the best-of-7 series 3-0 heading into Game 4 on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, RDS). They are one win away from their second Stanley Cup championship in three seasons.
