The Tampa Bay Lightning tied the game at 9:27 of the third period, but Carey Price made 24 saves and Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau scored the winning goal with 4:07 left in regulation to help the Montreal Canadiens stave off elimination for a second straight game and extend Eastern Conference Second Round series.

* The Canadiens forced a Game 6 after trailing a best-of-7 series 3-0 for the first time in franchise history (they've been down 3-0 in a series 11 times). They forced a Game 5 on five previous occasions but ultimately lost each series in five games.

* Price allowed two goals or fewer for the eighth time this postseason (11 GP), improving to 5-3 in those games. He improved to 6-5 with a 2.16 goals-against average, .923 save percentage and one shutout in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

MCDONAGH, KREIDER CUT SERIES DEFICIT TO 3-2

Ryan McDonagh scored at 9:37 of overtime after Chris Kreider scored the tying goal with 1:41 remaining in regulation to allow the New York Rangers to force Game 6 in their Eastern Conference Second Round series with the Washington Capitals.

* According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Rangers scored a tying goal in the final two minutes of regulation in a playoff game before winning in overtime for the first time since May 7, 2012, in Game 5 of the ESF vs. Washington (3-2 OT W) when Brad Richards tied the game with eight seconds left in regulation and defenseman Marc Staal scored at 1:35 of overtime.

* The Rangers have won each of their last nine playoff games when facing elimination at home dating to May 1, 2008, in Game 4 of the ESF vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins (3-0 W). Elias notes that New York's nine-game home winning streak when facing elimination is an NHL record.

Thornton believes Lightning have Cup-caliber depth

Friday, 05.08.2015 / 4:42 PM / 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Evan Sporer - NHL.com Staff Writer

NEW YORK -- When forward Shawn Thornton and the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 2011, they did so rolling four lines.

Thornton was a fixture on the Bruins' fourth line, nicknamed the "Merlot Line" for the jersey color its players wore during practice. Thornton, with Gregory Campbell and Daniel Paille, helped the Bruins' top forwards play fewer minutes, and contributed offensively during Boston's Cup run.

Forward depth is key to any deep playoff run, and it's something Thornton, who played for the Florida Panthers this season and has been working as an analyst for NBC Sports Group during the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, said he sees in the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"Throughout the last five, six, seven years, teams that have had depth that can play their third and fourth line an extra couple of minutes and take the pressure off the top two lines, and can contribute, those are the teams that have had a lot of success," Thornton said. "Tampa Bay is just another team that's showing that."

BLACKHAWKS ADVANCE AFTER FRANTIC FINISH IN MINNESOTA

Ahead 4-1 in the third period, the Chicago Blackhawks surrendered two goals in 51 seconds – as the teams combined for four goals in the final 6:40 of regulation – but held on to complete a four-game sweep of the Minnesota Wild and become the first team to advance to the conference finals in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

* The Blackhawks earned their ninth all-time sweep of a best-of-7 series and their first since the 2010 Western Conference Final vs. the San Jose Sharks. They have won all 11 best-of-7 series in which they held a 3-0 lead.

* Chicago completed a four-game sweep on the road for the first time since the 1996 WQF at the Calgary Flames, when Joe Murphy scored the series-clinching goal at 10:02 of the third overtime.

Van Riemsdyk knows rally from 3-0 deficit is possible

Thursday, 05.07.2015 / 5:18 PM / 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Jon Lane - NHL.com Staff Writer

Toronto Maple Leafs forward James van Riemsdyk knows taking small steps can lead to big results.

That's the message he's conveying to the Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota Wild, who are each facing 3-0 deficits in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Canadiens will attempt to avoid elimination at the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 4 on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports), followed by the Wild attempting to extend their Western Conference Second Round series against the Chicago Blackhawks (9:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports).

It was in 2010 during van Riemsdyk's first postseason appearance when his Philadelphia Flyers trailed the Boston Bruins 3-0 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Though the outside world declared the Flyers finished before the Bruins won the requisite four games, van Riemsdyk and his teammates had other ideas.

JOHNSON, LIGHTNING STUN CANADIENS TO TAKE 3-0 SERIES LEAD

The Canadiens evened the game midway through the third period, but Tyler Johnson scored the tie-breaking goal with 1.1 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Lightning to a 3-0 series lead.

The Montreal Canadiens evened the game midway through the third period, but Tyler Johnson scored the tie-breaking goal with 1.1 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 3-0 series lead.

* Johnson's goal was the second game-winning goal in the final two seconds of regulation in the Second Round of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs (also: Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward in Game 1 at the New York Rangers: 19:58). Per Elias, there were only two such goals scored in NHL postseason history prior to this year: Toronto Maple Leafs forward Bob Pulford on April 11, 1964, vs. the Detroit Red Wings (19:58) and Carolina Hurricanes forward Jussi Jokinen on April 21, 2009, vs. the New Jersey Devils (19:59).

GAUDREAU, BACKLUND PROVIDE SPARK AS FLAMES RALLY FOR GAME 3 VICTORY

Johnny Gaudreau scored the tying goal with 19.5 seconds left in regulation and Mikael Backlund scored at 4:24 of overtime to rally the Calgary Flames past the Anaheim Ducks, cutting their series deficit to 2-1.
* Via Elias, Gaudreau's goal at 19:40 of the third period was the latest tying goal in Flames playoff history, topping the previous mark set by Robert Reichel at 19:13 of the third period on May 9, 1995 vs. the San Jose Sharks (5-4 OT L).

* Elias also says Backlund (9 GP) is the fourth player in Flames history to score his first career playoff goal in overtime, following Eddy Beers (April 6, 1983 vs. the Vancouver Canucks), Marcus Nilson (April 22, 2004 at the Detroit Red Wings) and Steve Montador (May 9, 2004 at San Jose).
