COLUMBUS -- It was 366 days ago that the Columbus Blue Jackets players and coach Todd Richards met with the media, less than 24 hours after failing to qualify for the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs by a point.

The anguish was apparent when they spoke of the missed opportunities that cost them their second postseason appearance in franchise history.

After a rough start to the lockout-shortened season, the Blue Jackets' 19-5-4 (.750) record over the final two months was the second-best in the NHL behind the Pittsburgh Penguins (.852).

ST. LOUIS -- What now?

That's the million-dollar question the St. Louis Blues must answer as they head into another offseason of uncertainty after an early Stanley Cup Playoff exit.

Doug Armstrong and Ken Hitchcock both sat at a table Tuesday in front of media members two days after the Blues, who set a franchise record for wins in a season with 52, were eliminated in a six-game Western Conference First Round series by the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks. And their consensus response was simple: The Blues lack a killer instinct.

For the second consecutive season, the Blues led a series 2-0 before losing four straight and were left thinking, "What if?"

TAMPA -- For the Tampa Bay Lightning, two days weren't nearly enough to take away the sting of being swept out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Losing four in a row to the Montreal Canadiens in their Eastern Conference First Round series is too fresh a scar to have healed so quickly. The hurt was still evident Thursday, when the Lightning gathered at Tampa Bay Times Forum for end-of-the-season interviews with the coaching staff.

NEW YORK -- Following are some highlights of the 2013-14 National Hockey League regular season, which concluded yesterday:

RECORD ATTENDANCE

A total of 21,758,902 fans filled NHL venues to 96% of capacity in 2013-14. The total figure includes the 376,837 who packed the six Winter Classic, Heritage Classic and Stadium Series games. Had those six games instead been played before a sellout crowd at the designated home team’s arena, the attendance figure (21,492,671) still would have exceeded the previous single-season high of 21,475,223 set in 2008-09.

RIVALRY-DRIVEN REALIGNMENT, PLAYOFF FORMAT

Realignment and a revised playoff format that emphasizes rivalries has resulted in a tantalizing list of first-round playoff matchups that features:

* the first postseason meeting of the ‘Original Six’ Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings since 1957

* the inaugural clash between Eastern Conference newcomers the Columbus Blue Jackets and their closest geographic rival just 185 miles to the east -- the Pittsburgh Penguins
