Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators has won his second James Norris Memorial Trophy, awarded to the defenseman demonstrating "the greatest all-around ability in the position," as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.

Karlsson was named on 146 of 157 ballots in accumulating 964 voting points, winning a tight three-way race over Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings (889) and P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens (801). Karlsson, who previously won the award in 2012, joins Chicago's Duncan Keith as the only active defenseman with multiple Norris Trophy wins.

Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron has captured the Frank J. Selke Trophy in recognition of "the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game," as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.

Bergeron garnered 1,083 voting points, including 75 first-place votes, to claim a photo finish decision over second-place Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks (1,051 points). The result recalls their neck-and-neck race for the trophy in 2013, when Toews edged Bergeron for the win by a 1,260-1,250 margin.

Surprising Flames have most finalists at NHL Awards

LAS VEGAS -- At first, Calgary Flames forward Jiri Hudler asked a question.

"Would you have guessed that before the season?" Hudler said.

The answer is no; it's unlikely anybody would have guessed that the team that would have the most representatives eligible to win trophies Wednesday at the 2015 NHL Awards (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports) would be the Flames.

How could anyone have anticipated that considering so little was expected of the Flames this season after they finished the 2013-14 season with 77 points and a plan to play younger players and continue on a massive rebuild?

The Flames certainly weren't expected to compete for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, let alone get one.

Hudler felt differently.

P.K. Subban excited about larger role at NHL Awards

LAS VEGAS -- Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban is not only nominated for the Norris Trophy at this year's NHL Awards show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports), but he will be an important part of the broadcast for a second consecutive year.

Subban will be the host of the Samsung NHL Social Lounge, interviewing players backstage and checking out what is trending on social media. It is a step up from last year's job when Subban hosted the red carpet arrivals of the players prior to the ceremony.

With his role escalating, it would be fair to wonder if Subban is preparing a bid to actually host the show one year.

Price driven by desire to lift Canadiens to Stanley Cup

LAS VEGAS -- For years, as criticism surrounded Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price at a young age, he told people to be patient.

A goaltender's prime normally doesn't begin until his late 20s, Price would say over and over as he fielded questions about the inconsistency in his game earlier in his career.

Price turns 28 in August.

He was right.

After years of doubt about his long-term potential to become an elite NHL goalie, Price had a season for the ages and is in line to have that performance rewarded here Wednesday at the NHL Awards (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports).

Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price might want to consider bringing an extra suitcase to Las Vegas for the 2015 NHL Awards show Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN), because he could be going home with an extensive amount of hardware.

Price is a finalist for the Hart Trophy as the League's most valuable player, the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goalie, and the Ted Lindsay Award, given to the most outstanding player in a vote by the members of the NHL Players' Association.

He is the only person with the opportunity to win three trophies at the Awards show, which will be held at MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. Price is considered the favorite to win all three after a dominant and historic regular season.
