All-Star Game's 3-on-3 format will challenge goalies

Friday, 01.29.2016 / 3:00 AM / 2016 NHL All-Star Weekend

Kevin Woodley - NHL.com Correspondent

The NHL All-Star Game never really has been kind to goaltenders.

With all the focus on skill, speed and scoring, and little emphasis on backchecking and defense, high-scoring games are the norm. So what can the guys charged with keeping pucks out of the net expect from the new 3-on-3 format being used Sunday in the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game (5 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports)? With even more time and space, how will goalies approach this?

"Just survive," Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne said with a laugh. "When you think about 3-on-3 with all the best players, there's not going to be a lot of defending to help the goalie. So you just try to have fun with it."

Poile proposes Ruff put four Predators on ice together

NASHVILLE -- Nashville Predators general manager David Poile doesn't typically like to meddle in the coach's business, but he had a suggestion for Lindy Ruff, who will coach the Central Division in the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game on Sunday (5 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

"He has an opportunity in a 3-on-3 format to put four players from one team all on the ice at the same time," Poile said. "Maybe he should try that."

Ruff, the Dallas Stars coach, has that opportunity now because Predators forward James Neal was added to the Central Division roster as a replacement for Chicago Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews on Thursday. Neal joins Predators goalie Pekka Rinne and defensemen Roman Josi and Shea Weber on the Central Division team.

NASHVILLE -- Set on a concert series stage erected on Demonbreun Street across from the County Music Hall of Fame and Museum and surrounded by buildings and land that were nothing more than parking lots when the Nashville Predators opened for business 18 years ago, the NHL and the city of Nashville officially kicked off 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend on Thursday in a manner befitting the style and culture in this city.

The festivities kicked off with a guitar being handed out as a gift, a free live concert from a local band that's made it big and one of country music's biggest stars on stage to introduce them.

"What an incredible setup, what an incredible beginning to All-Star Weekend," said NHL Commissioner Bettman, who received the guitar from Nashville Mayor Megan Barry. "The planning that the city of Nashville with the Predators and the local organizing committee and Bridgestone have done is nothing short of phenomenal. People are going to be thrilled to be part of this weekend."

Nashville has had a hockey fandom even if the popularity and a deep understanding of the history of the game wasn't always prevalent.

Youth hockey tournament key part of All-Star Weekend

Zach Jackson, the hockey coordinator at Ford Ice Center in Antioch, Tenn., wanted to figure out a way to involve the growing local youth hockey movement into the celebrations surrounding the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game this weekend.

"Basically, the All-Star Game is a way to celebrate hockey in general and here in Nashville," Jackson said. "The All-Star Game is for the kids. They love seeing all of their guys in one place showing off their skills, and we wanted to tap into that."

There was no better way than to have a youth hockey tournament at the Ford Ice Center with the Nashville Junior Predators as the host team.

"It's a cool way to bring everybody together here during the weekend so they can enjoy the All-Star Game while giving some high-level teams some pretty good competition," Jackson said. "For us, it is a great opportunity to bring youth hockey teams into Nashville and build on that Smashville name that the city has built for itself."

Pekka Rinne's All-Star guide to Nashville

Thursday, 01.28.2016 / 3:00 AM / 2016 NHL All-Star Weekend

Pekka Rinne - Special to NHL.com

Nashville has grown so much, even since I came to the city in 2008. It's not just the amount of people but the buildings; there is something coming up all the time either downtown or new neighborhoods popping up in new spots.

Even from the time I was there in the Gulch District, there was really nothing going on. Now, that area is really blooming and booming with restaurants and other stuff. The 12 South area and East Nashville is a really trendy spot nowadays, so I just feel like it's been cool to see that the city has grown so much.

Whenever I have my family and friends in town, obviously Broadway is a must-see. It's close to Bridgestone Arena, so it's easy and convenient after the game. Everyone knows about Broadway. You can go there and see a bunch of different bars and all kinds of music. There's always good music playing and a lot of live bands. It's a really cool atmosphere, really laid back. People are super friendly.
